valve cover gasket - Possible Valve Cover Replacement Empty
PostSubject: Possible Valve Cover Replacement   valve cover gasket - Possible Valve Cover Replacement EmptyThu Mar 20, 2008 10:51 am

I have been getting a funny oil burning smell in my interior every so often while driving. About a month ago I removed my engine cover and observed oil which looked like it was coming from the valve cover. I cleaned the oil off and tightened the bolts and I still have the problem. While getting gas at a local service station the guy said it could be the intake manifold gasket and he would like to see it. I went home and removed the cover and observed oil which looked to be on the top of the exhaust manifold which would tell me its from the valve cover gasket and not an intake manifold gasket. I was quoted $250 for a new Valve cover gasket installed. It looks pretty simple! Anyone have any insight into this?

$250 for one or both gaskets? either way thats very steep...If its just the front one leaking just go out and buy the gaskets yourself ( They were like 50 or 60 bucks from autozone IIRC ) and do the job at home. It only takes about 15 minutes to do the front. Not a hard job at all.

I looked up the labor in the past. Front pays a mechanic about 20 minutes and the back pays 45 minutes.

That said.. expect the back will take an hour or so and the front almost no time. Overall it's a pretty easy thing to do.

I have some mechanical expierence just from messing around with cars in the past. I kinda laughed at the $250 quote. I looked at it and it seems like a pretty easy straight forward job. The guy said it was expensive because it was the supercharged Rivera which doesn't make any sense at all... What a MORON!

The L67 engines have a new front gasket coming out for the W-body recall. I'd try to get hold of that instead of using the old OEM gaskets. I'd assume they will seal up better.

Fel-Pro gaskets and grommets set: Part # VS 50465 R

Picked up the set tonight at NAPA for $59. I imagine there may be cheaper places.
