On the upper section of the dispstick there is a plastic part that holds the o-ring
in place. This part split in half when I removed the dipstick to check the oil. I decided to order a new dipstick - GM part number 12574822. The hatched section on the new dipstick is lower than the original. The picture below shows the stock dipstick on top.

From 1995 Buick Riviera

I wonder if they are different from Series I to II? Maybe they sent the wrong part #. Did they look it up for you or did you order by p/n?

The GM part # should be stamped on both, do they have the same number?

I think the question is, what is the distance from the plastic stop to the one-quart-low line. Your picture does not show. And if the plastic stop is adjustable (does it have set screw) then just match them up and you are set.

Would not surprise me if GM changed the oil pan and the new stick matches the new pan. Didn't I read somewhere that the GPs or Bonnevilles got a cast aluminum pan? Is it a PITB to change the pans?

Good point, hold them with the plastic stops at the same level then compare the crosshatch area. I've never seen an adjustable dipstick.

mine has been broke like that for awhile now. it will not cause any problems. it still holds in place and the o-ring doesnt really do much since oil doesnt travel all the way up the tube.

also just a heads up, zzp now sells dipsticks for $5

The dealer looked up the part number based on my VIN. I also verified it on GM Parts Direct.

Different part numbers. The old number was discontinued.

Ok, so how about the side by side comparison with the plastic stops even instead of the bottom of the stick?

Yes, make sure the distance from the top of the dipstick to the hash marks is the same, not the bottom end to the hashes.

The dipstick on my 2000 Regal did that.
I used Gorilla Glue to repair it. clap

The picture of the side by side comparison was taken with the plastic stops lined up. Both are the same exact length. The old part number was 24504251.

I suggest marking the new one to match the old one or return the new one for another.
Could have shipped the wrong one regardless of what part number is on it. It happens.
