Can't hurt to check fuses first, but you said the AC works, just not the steering controls.

do the other steering wheel controls work just not the temp control? did you get the pac swi-x controller?
the only 2 things that are unplugged are the headlight knob and trac/odo reset buttons. is there a wire in the gm harness that controls temp?

Wait did you replace it with a aftermarket unit or stock . If with a aftermarket unit the you need a Pac swi-x like Mr.Riviera said.

Just want to add to this thread for the record...

I recently took my stock stereo out to see what I am working with for the stereo project. I was just running with the thermostat and no stereo for a week. The steer wheel thermostat controls would not work when I had just the thermostat powered up. I plug the stereo back in and then my thermostat controls are back.

So, it seems like the circuit is not complete until it runs through the stereo. Anyone else have experiences like this?

Yep that's how it is. That's why when you upgrade to a new headunit you need to buy the PAC adapter for that headunit otherwise you lose all steering wheel controls.

As this thread tells it - you will need to wire in an adapter to keep those controls working. The steering wheel controls are all run through 1 wire with different resistances in the switch itself. The OEM radio measures the resistance and determines if it's supposed to turn the volume up or down or whatever, or send a signal back out to the HVAC.

Little known fact - the PAC adapter has a number of functions it's aware of. You can basically tell it that your steering wheel controls are anything you want, i.e. you can tell it that Volume UP is really volume DOWN etc. during it's learning procedure. Of course you wouldn't want to do that (unless it's your older brother's car), but you can also tell it that some of the buttons are Fan up and Fan down if you want to control something different. (Oldsmobile had fan up and down switches on the steering wheel). The only thing really confusing is that your steering wheel buttons are then labelled wrong, but someone with enough creativity can overcome that.

Yep. Need stock radio or adapter to keep Steering Wheel Controls. I never bothered to get the adapter with mine. Doesn't bother me a bit.

+1. It's really not that hard to reach over 2" and adjust the volume. That and since we have automatic climate control it's not like we need to mess with it much either. The only time I could see it possibly being useful enough to buy is during the winter when my hands are frozen to the wheel.
