Bright dash lights Empty
PostSubject: Bright dash lights   Bright dash lights EmptyFri Jan 24, 2014 12:35 am

Hi guys so when I turn the dash lights dimmer. The clock and how many miles and what gear I'm in lights are still freaking bright. They don't dim, but everything else does, how does that work?

I don't recall if everything dims on my 98. I keep mine set low and haven't touched it in a long time.

Oh sweet thanks, haha sorry I didn't read if very well, I know one of my lights on the dash doesn't glow it's on the dimmer right under the thing you pull out to turn the lights on, it slides left and right and it doesn't do anything for me, I'm not sure what it's for but I'm assuming it's for the lights that won't dim, I'm not sure how to fix it if it doesn't work

That's the twilight sentinel control that lets you set the time your headlamps stay on when you lock/unlock the vehicle. The owners manual describes how to use it.

All of my dash lights dim, BUT the trip/odo, radio, and climate control lights do not go as dim as the rest of the dash lights.

It makes some sense. The ODO, radio, and HVAC are a fluorescent display type, while the dash gauges are back-lit with incandescent bulbs. Fluorescent displays are dimmable, but not on the same circuit as the gauge bulbs. While they could have used a 2nd dimmer circuit, it would have added cost. I've noticed other cars with this same issue. They probably figured if most of the dash dimmed, most drivers will be okay with it. It's never bothered me personally, but I drive with mine near max brightness 100% of the time.

On most vehicles, I can't put up with full bright dash lights at night. Maybe it's my old eyes.  shocked

Depends on the color of light for me. There are studies that seem to confirm certain colors have an effect on us at nighttime. Some of the findings even suggest it can effect our health. Red is the easiest on the eyes at night. Military flashlights have a red filter to preserve night vision. Green is okay. The Riv's dash has always been easy on my eyes. Blue is worst. My GTO was converted to blue lighting by the previous owner and it is horrid to view at night. I turn the dimmer most of the way down. I've considered converting back to the OEM green, but really don't feel like tearing apart the interior of a car I just bought.

It all depends on the relative brightness. In the middle of nowhere with no streetlights and not much oncoming traffic, dimmer is nice. When it's bright around and there is a lot of ambient light it's nice to have the dash lights brighter.

If I'm on a long road trip once I get away from the city and traffic I'll dim the dash lights as low as they go.
