Noise when rolling in to second.. Empty
PostSubject: Noise when rolling in to second..   Noise when rolling in to second.. EmptyWed Jan 07, 2015 11:04 am

Hey all.. I have a '98 Riv w/ 166k on the clock.  She is still in really good condition, although I think the coupler job might be coming up soon.  Anyway, the real issue for this thread is this:  Whenever my car has been off and sitting for awhile, doesn't have to be all the way cold, but cool, and I start her up and begin to drive, in the transition from 1st to 2nd gear there is a quick, slight, *grind*.  Almost more like a *shoof* noise, not quite metallic sounding.  It won't ever do it again during the course of driving, unless i turn her off and let her sit again for awhile, then the once on takeoff (1st to 2nd transition...), so on and so forth.  Does anyone know what this might be?  Hopefully that's enough description... it feels as though it may be coming from right between the front axle shafts...

is the noise audible? Can you record it? Can you feel it in your seat?

I have something similar but I am almost certain it's because of my mounts being expired. it generally happens between 1st to 2nd shift. The shift sounds like its being held longer than needed.

Are you sure you aren't just hearing the ABS run its self-test? This happens every single time you first start the car and start moving. Usually around 8-11mph. It only happens once, and won't do it again until the next ignition cycle....

I think you just explained the noise that has just been bugging me in my Grand Marquis every time I start driving so thank you for that!

Never noticed it in the Riv but it is definitely a slight grind noise like the OP describes. If it only does it a single time, I wouldnt think it could be tranny. I would watch speedo for it in that 8-11 mph range that Abbaddon suggested. Not sure what speed the car shifts 1-2 at with light throttle?

Wow! I've been hearing this same exact noise ever since I got my Riv. I know exactly what you're talking about. It's only once every start up, generally when the car has cooled down, and it makes the same noise that you describe. I've always thought that it was my worn mounts, but it still does the same noise even after the replacement.

What's really weird is if it happens in a parking lot or something and you have your foot on the brake shocked If you aren't ready for it, it kinda freaks you out lol.

Haha ok awesome. That must be what it is...it does it only once per ignition cycle so I thought maybe it was intentional design. Good to know thanks everyone
