Noise from front left - 1998 Riviera Empty
PostSubject: Noise from front left - 1998 Riviera   Noise from front left - 1998 Riviera EmptyWed Feb 26, 2020 3:19 am

Hi there,

I have on my 1998 Riviera a noise from the front left when I do right turns - some kind of humming joises that increases to noisier sound when I accelerate - but only in right turns. As soon as the steering almost straight again it stops.

What I did so far:

- new drive shaft left and right
- new wheel bearing
- brakes are fresh and tires are new

Any idea where to look next? Noise is still there. Transmission problems maybe?

Thanks for any help

I would check the engine and transmission mounts. The Riviera's mounts are not very robust and when weakened by age will allow engine torque to bend them to their limits.

Replacement mounts or mount inserts (the rubber thing that goes inside the steel or iron mount cage) are not that expensive, look them up on rockauto.com to get an idea of what's generally available.

One mount is in the drivers side wheel well.  If not replaced at some point, by now it is wack - look for whether the rubber is separating from the metal, or swelling.  I replaced mine a couple years ago. The replacement was mad expensive from GM. The old P/N was 22174975, you will need to ask a dealer parts counter for the number for the replacement. Put the part number into eBay search -- people post NOS parts there, you may find one in for instance a mixed lot of parts from a now-closed dealership.

There are two "refillable" mounts on the subframe. They are inexpensive and not that hard to install (dish soap or tune-up grease) but a bear to get out (last time I did mine I burned it with a torch a little to weaken it and then yanked out the debris--I DO NOT recommend you do the same). The aftermarket mounts are stiffer, and transmit some vibration to the cabin - not sure how to finesse that.

There is one mount by the water pump, it is unobtainium but also very unlikely to be bad.
