Repainting Interior Pieces Empty
PostSubject: Repainting Interior Pieces   Repainting Interior Pieces EmptyFri Sep 09, 2011 7:42 am

I thought about swapping out my interior parts with the interior of a different color when I realized that this stuff can be painted!

Has anyone ever painted their interiors before? I did a search and came across the guy who did his in glossy black. Does anyone else have experience painting inside the belly of their Riviera?

Anyone know anyone who has used this stuff? I love my car I just wish I had a dark interior!

Thanks for the link. Did you paint whole pieces or just do touch up work?

PostSubject: Write-Up: Repainting Interior   Repainting Interior Pieces EmptyMon Sep 26, 2011 12:51 pm

Hey guys, It started out with just replacing the button for the lid on the center console and now has somehow become a big interior project. joy

When I replaced the button I had to do some cosmetic work to it because it was chipped up pretty bad. After the sanding and wash I had to pick a color for paint. I chose black. I think a deep charcoal would be perfect but I couldn't find any so I am going with flat black, gloss black, and flat maroon, same car color as the car. I have always thought painting plastics/vinyl was a bad idea but from what i'v read and seen and have done so far it looks like great results are quite easy to obtain.

I will try my best to document my progress here. thumbsup

Color of the interior now..

It is fun driving without the console, gives the cockpit a different feel

The worst of the damage. I had a lot of trouble getting the piece off because of the awful awful screws that would only give up when I could get underneath of them. I have J+B weld and will fabricate the corners, redrill them, etc..

and off topic, does anyone know what this is?

Found it under the seat by the battery. Looks like it was attached to the body of the car by a white/clear crinkly tube dunno

that last pic is of the batter drain tube. Put it back on the battery and attach the "T" fitting to the drain tube that goes to the floor pan of the car.
This allows battery acid fumes to vent OUTSIDE the car, preventing corrosion and injury to parts of the car and people in the back seat on long trips.

Hey guys, this project is on hold for now. I am taking her to the garage this weekend for a huge overhaul project to repair the collision from Halloween weekend... stupid ghosts. I will make a new thread starting with pictures of what she looks like now. A wrecked face and a sad expression frown

I have been using Rustoleum vinyl paint. It's the can with the car seat on the front. It's like $6 a can or something. It has been working great.
As for prep work I have been scrubbing each piece with that green cleaner stuff. simple green? maybe? At first I was just cleaning, drying, then painting. But then I got the adhesive promoter stuff to lay down before the paint. It might just be me but I think I had better results without using the prep adhesive stuff. It leaves a weird texture.

Great, thanx!

I've researched about the adhesive promoter and it looks like it doesn't work very well frown

PostSubject: Tan interior matching paint?   Repainting Interior Pieces EmptyWed Feb 12, 2014 6:32 pm

Anybody have a source for paint that matches the tan interior (within reason) of my 96 Riv? I'd like to redo my steering wheel, and a few nicks in the console. Since you own a Riv I think you may already know why the steering wheel is an issue. I think somebody out there makes fabric paint that is flexable, but I've searched and can't find any. Thanks in advance. -R

If SEM doesn't carry your color, any good modern auto paint store can make a rattle can special for you so long as you provide the paint code. Email SEM in any event.

im currently in middle of prepping my interior pieces for paint. WTF is this pastel/putty paint stuff GM used? It's awful. I have to scrape before I can sand. Many panels have this pastel crayon like stuff on them. Do you guys have this too?

If I wipe a panel down the 'paint' comes right off with it!

Mad respect to anyone who has taken the wood grain off the shift and radio/thermo panels. thumbsup

I think that rubbery coating is to give the dash a more premium feel. It is nice, but it is easily scratched. I have a few spots where it is scratched off and it kind of annoys me. The Riv's interior has held up really well though and has not peeled or warped in shape over the years like many older cars have.
