I have at least three broken wires in the driver door wire harness.

I'd like to make repairs without destroying the rubber boot. Can I unplug from either end? What's the best route to success?

Not sure what I'd do. If I had to slit the boot I would repair it with silicone or rubber "amalgamating tape." If I had time on my hands I'd work the wires back thru from the door side.

It's a project for when the snow goes away. I see that the harness is available and it looks like there's plugs. A couple of the wires are fine and seem single strand.

It's GREAT that the harness is available. If you have the patience attaching the plugs after threading the wires is tedious but not difficult.

Maybe I'm thinking too hard. I'd guess that the wires are more accessible behind the door panel. My preference would be to not cut the boot.

I honestly forget which side is easier to pull/reinsert, and I recall that the thing to do was to either pull back the boot and replace damaged wires one by each or to simply replace the harness. It would not surprise me to find that the wires would pull from one side or the other (from inside the door out or from inside the car into the door) without too much hassle. My wild guess would be from inside the car out, just thinking about the door as a subassembly on a factory line.

the ground wire in my 1995 riv's driver door broke causing the window to stop.
i used the old wire to pull in a replacement.
the number of strands within the wire relates to how resistant the wire is re failure from flexing,
so i bought the best tinned wire from west marine.

it was necc to:
cut broken wire inside door and splice new wire to old wire
streamline the splice by soldering
cover splice with 2 layers of shrink tube,
pull old wire from inside passenger compartment to bring new wire through rubber boot
notes:
open door fully to allow rubber boot to have least restriction
lube the new wire with a common product used by electricians when pulling wire thru conduit
remove fuse panel above parking brake to get inside access.

rubber boot protects inner door and interior of car from ingress of water, spray, noise,
so do not injure said boot.

I took the door panel off yesterday in a effort to size up the wire repair. It looks like I can unplug harness connectors and back the wires out through the door jamb and do the job without destroying the rubber boot.
