 | Subject: Tie Rod Boot Repair? Sun Sep 16, 2007 1:03 pm | |
| I must've ripped the boot on the driver-side tie-rod, because it's leaking some kind of fluid. Anyone ever replace the boot? I'm going to try today if I can find the part. How difficult is it to do? Tips, tricks?
After driving it today, I wonder if the rip is serious enough that I need to fix. It doesn't seem to be leaking now. I'm not sure if the boot is filled with grease, or fluid, or what. _________________ "An intercooled, supercharged, 280 HP Buick Riviera with neck-snapping acceleration and precise handling that proves GM can make something really interesting and competent, if only they would build more than one at a time." - John R. | the boot should be filled with a grease, like wheels bearing grade grease. you can buy repair kits if the only thing torn is the boot. they just clamp around it to prevent any further leaks. it only becomes serious when it spits out all of the grease and runs dry AFAIK. my dads 93 PA buick has a passenger boot that shot a shit load of grease all over the subframe and he driver it to work every day. i dont know how long it will last or what might go first but if it were my car i would get it fixed reasonably soon. got any pics of the spill? can you turn the wheel and see and cracks in the boot? _________________ |

| It's strange, when I tore it, It leaked something that looked and smelled like motor oil onto the frame, but there wasn't enough that it dripped on the ground. I thought, it couldn't be power steering fluid because it would've run dry.
So I bought a replacement boot from NAPA for $20. It looks like it's just a protective sleeve that keeps the grease on the joint. I think the tear is small, and now I'm not so worried about it. Maybe the fluid that leaked out was water that had condensed inside the boot over time?
I'll inspect the boot when I have some more time. If it's bad, I'll replace. If it's not a big tear, I may just let it be for awhile, I really don't feel like taking the tie rod end off and then having the front end realigned. _________________ "An intercooled, supercharged, 280 HP Buick Riviera with neck-snapping acceleration and precise handling that proves GM can make something really interesting and competent, if only they would build more than one at a time." - John R. | Called my mechanic and talked about this. He said I probably tore it slightly along one of the "V"s, and the liquid leaking out was most likely water. The boots are vented with a tube to help evaporate moisture, but some can get trapped in the bottom under the grease. He told me not to worry about it as long as the hole wasn't big enough to let the grease escape, and if necessary I can clean the boot off real good and apply some silicone RTV to the area. Sounds good to me! Taking the new boot back to NAPA... _________________ "An intercooled, supercharged, 280 HP Buick Riviera with neck-snapping acceleration and precise handling that proves GM can make something really interesting and competent, if only they would build more than one at a time." - John R. | good to know it's nothing too serious. hopefuly the RTV will keep the dirt out of the boot and the grease in...of course there is always duct tape j/k _________________ |

| Duct tape worked on sealing the rear ELC air line to one of the shocks, lol. Over a month and still holding! _________________ "An intercooled, supercharged, 280 HP Buick Riviera with neck-snapping acceleration and precise handling that proves GM can make something really interesting and competent, if only they would build more than one at a time." - John R.
