SilverStars, EuroLights, X-treme Power & other Halogen Bulbs Empty
PostSubject: SilverStars, EuroLights, and other Halogen & Xenon bulbs   SilverStars, EuroLights, X-treme Power & other Halogen Bulbs EmptyTue Feb 06, 2007 10:48 am

I installed a set of SilverStar low beams about 6-7 months ago. One went out last night. Luckily, I kept the OEM bulb (still going after 9 years). This is going to be fun swapping it out tonight in -2 deg weather. I also look forward to paying lots of $ for the new bulbs... only to change them again within a year! nervous

Bummer, but that's the reason I'm just sticking with OEM. I have better things to do with my time/money than play with H/L's. I don't understand how they can get away with selling such inferior parts.

Aaron, you need to go with http://eurolamps.com/eurolamps/home.htm
Awesome bulbs. You'll need the Xenon charged blue/white.
$35.00 but well worth it.
The bulb looks blue looking at the headlight in the daytime, but it shines brillant white at night.

Hmm... The reason I went with SilverStars is because I thought the Xenons didn't last. So, you've had good luck with these?

You should have a 1 year replacement warranty. Did you save the receipt?

i've has my silvers on for over a year now with no problems, the cold weather draws more on the filaments so they will blow faster. plus the 98's have daytime running lights so your's are used more often.
and i can usually find a 2 pack of silvers for ~$21.

I have to admit, I'm curious. scratch I like that HID/blue look. All the upscale euro sedans seem to have them.

yeah, silverstars suck as far as how long they last, as well as anything w/ the blue coating. the blue coating actually harms light output (although it may not look like it). ge nighthawks are much cheaper, last longer, and have higher output. there also is like a 9011 bulb or something used in chrysler 300's and some others that are even better (or so ive been told)

The SilverStars didn't look blue to me. Much brighter, though. I may just replace them. They're more $ but worth it, imo.

yea, i dont think mine have a blue tint, just white and crisp. they definatly light up the road better than stock. so what would happen if you put a 9011 silverstar into the riv ? could it be made to fit or would there need to be a rewire?

I love the light output from the SilverStars. I keep two in my glove box. When one goes out, replace both because the other will go out real soon. I emailed a complaint to Sylvania about it and they basically said 'yep they don't last very long' and sent me a free pair of bulbs! So I'll keep them. I consider $40/year worth it for the better light.

I'll have to check out those GE bulbs.

I've been noticing a lot of head light out on other cars around here. It seems when the cold temps set in, bulbs must burn out more easily. Anyone else notice this in winter up north?

same reason the light bulbs always burn out when you first flick it on. the filament needs more power when it is cold.

6 days after the first one went the 2ND one blew!!! At least they're consistent. Now I'm really needing these Euros to get here fast!!!

I worked over tonight till 1:30am so I could drive home with my brights on, lol.

SilverStars, EuroLights, X-treme Power & other Halogen Bulbs Empty
PostSubject: You gotta love duct tape   SilverStars, EuroLights, X-treme Power & other Halogen Bulbs EmptyWed Feb 14, 2007 2:10 pm

Last Friday one of my SilverStar head lamps when out. I ordered a set of blue/white Eurolamps online, and figured I could get by a few days on one head light. That worked out fine until last night when the other bulb burned out! The new bulbs still haven't come in the mail, and now I had a 30 min drive in the dark. If I drove home with no lights, I'd get pulled over for sure, or worse, get into an accident if someone didn't see me. So I decided to just turn the brights on... not good. People were not happy, and I can't say that I blame them.

But that gave me an idea. I pulled into a gas station and bought a mini roll of duct tape for $1.79. Took a rag and dried my front head lights off, then applied tape across the upper half of the housing. In theory, this would mask the brights from the middle up, so other cars wouldn't be blinded, but would give me something to see by. I still haven't gotten the delivery, so this is how my Riv will look until they come in:

Here's a couple with the lights on. These are in daytime running mode. They're much brighter at night. Kind of reminds me of a snake with the new "eye lids". At night, no one flips their brights at me now, but if you get out and stand in front of the car, they're still bright enough that you can't stare at them for very long without discomfort.

its McGuyver! give him duct tape, a tooth pick, and shoe laces and BAM you've got a Riviera! lol

are the brights aimed higher than the low's? some people flash me b/c i guess they think i have my brights on (they look stupid when i flash them with even brighter lights)
i have my lows aimed slightly higher than normal and with the silverstars they are really bright at a certain distance.

so can you just aim the high beams as low as they will go? and point them closer together so that they dont hit people at a wide angle?

Yeah, the first pic reminds me of an SR-71 in the hanger.

quote: "it's MacGuyver!"

Lol, I felt like MacGuyver when I was taping them up. People didn't ask, but I could tell they were curious...

Haven't had the chance to see exactly how it works, but if memory serves, there are a couple of adjustment screws that align each of the left and right units. I think the design of the internal reflectors is what aims the beam up or down. If you tilt the unit, both low and high beams would be effected, as it doesn't look like they are independant. The brights are always aimed higher than the lows.

With the duct tape on, almost no light goes to the ground. Most all of it still aims straight ahead, it's just not as bright. Just enough to see by; not enough to tick off other drivers.

And it cost $1.79. happy
