Yeesh, brakes... Empty
PostSubject: Yeesh, brakes...   Yeesh, brakes... EmptyTue Feb 19, 2008 12:51 am

My brake pedal is playing games with me. This problem just came up all of a sudden on my way home after an hour long drive to nowhere and back. When I apply the brakes and keep even pressure, they work fine. When I go to coast down a hill the other day, I find out that when I decrease pressure on the pedal, the brakes disengage, and the pedal has travel all the way to the floor before they work again. If I let off all the way and begin pressing again, the brakes come back, but again if I decrease pressure at all they give out.

Do I need to have them readjusted, is there something wrong with the line, or what? We're scheduling our first visit with the mechanic this or next Saturday, and I want to know what to tell him to look at. How expensive does this sound? I'm expecting around $200.

Sorry 'bout that. How hard/expensive is that to fix? The words 'leak' and 'master cylinder' together don't usually turn out well......Would I have to get any replacement parts?

About $50, can do in an afternoon with someone around who's done this type of work before.

And oh by the way - do it immediately. The MC does not get any better and yours sounds way past due.

You need a 'black and decker Workmate' or a bench vise to hold the MC so you can 'bench bleed' it before putting on the car.

This is also a good time to check wheel cylinders for leakage. You will want to flush the system with clean brake fluid.

I ahve been thinking about posting an article about how to make your own power flusher from a garden sprayer and a handful of brass air line fittings. Any interest?

This won't be a do-it-yourself job for me. I'm bringing it in either this or next Saturday, and I'll tell him to look at the master cylinder and flush the brake system.
