new noises ?

hey everyone, two new noises has started with the rivi. first is a clunk that is only prominent after i come to a complete stop and just after I start to accelerate fairly lightly it makes a clunking noise, i thought it could possibly be a motor mount because they seem worn but its just after i start accelerating , and if i accelerate quicker form a stop it happens sooner but its always after the initial take off, has me quite confused.

the next noise is when im reversing and turning the wheel either way with my foot lightly on the brakes its like an intermittent rubbing/vibration noise but i can feel it through the brake pedal and steering wheel it becomes less prominent if i take my foot of the brakes while im reversing .

no idea where to start looking

Check the motor and trans mounts first. I have seen both of those symptoms caused by the mounts. Especially transmission mounts. Not sure if the 98 has one in the bottom of the trans like some other GM cars of that era.

You can check the mounts by inserting a large pry bar to apply leverage near the mount and watch for slop.

no disrespect but I think that both noises are from the same issue, regardless if they are the mounts or not. Good advise with the pry bar. I like to have a helper in the car and rev it in both reverse and drive. Sometimes they won't rear their ugly head with out some twisting torque on it.

Okay, thanks for clarification. It read to me like two separate issues.

If this is the case, your issue could be the front brake pads and/or rotors. Usually if it can be felt through both the steering wheel and the brake pedal, while brake is applied, it is brake-related.

(I don't believe it's related to your clunk, but could be. Check that your caliper bracket bolts are tight.)

will check the caliper bolts! / and to report on the mounts the front mount that i was going to replace with hockey pucks eventually, seems to be the worse. With just a pry bar i can get quite a lot of movement from it the other ones seem pretty stiff.

The factory mounts move a lot with a pry bar, especially the front one. It's a "hollow" mount. It only has rubber connecting in two places, and the rest is empty space. It's designed that way for comfort. Now, if the rubber is separated or split, it will move more and cause a clunk. I would have somebody brake torque the engine while you watch under the hood. Chances are, you'll find exactly which mount is bad that way......

Will do! I work tomorrow il have my coworker brake torque it while im in the pit, would have done it today but I took the day off work since its my birthday 21! I'm legal in the states now if i ever visit.

 

it seems to be the rear motor mount that's making the clunk will replace asap!

Good job on locating it. Motor and trans mounts cause all sorts of funny noises and vibrations while driving especially at highway speeds in OD.
