P0171 is a lean condition. Check for vacuum leaks or possible air intake tube leaking due to being cracked or misaligned. Also a faulty O2 sensor could be the culprit and long term would damage your cat. If you have access to a scan tool check O2 sensor S1B1 to make sure it is fluctuating hi to lo frequently on a graph. If it looks like a flat line, it would suggest the sensor is faulty. Check it at operating temperature.

I suggest that you find the cause of the P0171 before installing the new cat. Wouldn't want you to shorten the life of the new one.

Most of your questions were answers or suggestions were made in another thread. Please try to keep them together for our sanity instead of creating a new thread halfway through your problems.

One of your first recommendations was to check for vacuum leaks and solve the lean problem before going any further. Throwing the wrong parts at a problem is simply wasting your money. You don't have a "bad O2 sensor" code, you have a lean code. Figure that out before you go wasting more money.

Well mr caddy I was unaware I was answering an asking questions at the same time. And your right about wasting money this has been a journey to come this far. On a 96 with alot of original parts its only right to take advice from some one who has done it.. cat was busted so I removed it I revamped my vacuum lines and im still hitting a brick wall

If you are confident that all of your vacuum lines are in good shape now, and your air cleaner is properly secured, your next step should be to clean your mass air flow sensor. On supercharged cars it is recommended to remove the MAF before spraying cleaner to avoid damaging the coating on the SC rotors. Mass air flow sensor cleaner is available at any auto parts store. Good luck!

Troubleshooting car problems needs to be methodical and organized. It is easy to get frustrated and just start throwing parts at a problem, but will usually be more time consuming and more expensive. I never like to throw too much troubleshooting advice at one time because people tend to not like to take them step by step. I also like to start with the things that a novice or DIYer can handle on their own. To someone that doesn't have a lot of experience doing car repairs it can be overwhelming. So I try to keep it simple. Just keep eliminating possible causes and you should be ok.

So far you should have checked and repaired any possible vacuum leaks. Made sure that your air cleaner box and intake tube are properly installed. Next you should clean your MAF.

Also, your CEL may not turn off right away unless you clear it with a scan tool. So you will have to drive it a few times to know if you fixed the problem.

Ses lite went off after a trip the muffler shop by itself (cat was super busted)... today it came back on p0171 if you look on my Riviera From hell post you can see my fuel trims are maxed out.. I did a lil trick with a cigar and the vacuum lines didn't seem to be a leak. Maf cleaner next

Johnny, make sure your not running your Riv' hard with this possibly lean condition. Lean running engines are prone to serious damage when pushed hard. I know you are installing a 3" downpipe but what is the condition of your stock downpipe and gasket? An exhaust leak before the pre cat O2 sensor could give you a false lean code. Might be the thing to check before or after messing with the MAF. Also recheck any repairs or maintenance you have performed recently, before the CEL came on. You might find something you overlooked. Good luck!

has this been resolved? im also getting a po171 lean code and a p01406 egr pintle valve circuit code. So far ive replaced my upstream o2 on the downpipe, and cleaned the egr and replaced the gasket. after cleaning the egr the code wouldnt set for like a day then just today it set a p0171. Should i just go ahead and replace my egr or is it something else? my fuel filter is original could that be the problem? my car needs to pass emissions soon!!

I assume its original its very rusty and the car has 117k right now just bought a new filter and will install tmrw, but I'm not very confident that its the problem In almost certain that its my egr so I bought a brand new one all this money for a scam called emissions...

Be very careful breaking loose the filter connection. Use PB blaster to lube first. Use proper tools (flare wrenches) to get a good grip on the fittings. Good luck!
