I haven't seen one for the series 1, sorry.

He's talking about a plate with a big idler pulley on it that mounts where the A/C used to be. It's a critical part of the belt routing, but if you never use the A/C, it's a waste of weight to lug around.

ah! i think i get it. a bracket might be not to difficult to fabricate? and use the stock pully? im guessing without that extra pully ,you might run into belt clearance issues?

Wasn't there someone on this forum who bought the series 2 AC delete kit for their series one? I recall it fit, but was offset slightly, something a few washers could fix.

Edit: did some searching, not sure where I'd seen that, maybe it was another site.

All I found that was related was this:

AHHA! FOUND IT!

This is something I would consider. I have been driving with my windows down cause I keep getting pulled over for tinted windows so now I have gotten use to the ac not being on. I wonder how much weight that would save? Ideas??

remove the tint?

wink

I think you can lose about 40 lbs for the whole system, if you remove the compressor, evap, condensor, lines...

Car looks too good with the dark tint but I do like the idea of dropping 30-40lbs... look for ac parts in the for sale sections soon!

I'd rather lose 30lbs than give up AC.

Not that I have it to lose......maybe 15lbs.

I think I found a solution for all this. The reason someone might want to do this is if their A/C compressor locked up and they were stranded. I recently encountered this when my compressor locked up and the engine would not crank.

My first thought was to use one designed for a 95 buick park ave ultra, this one may have worked with using spacers to align the pulley to the others. My typical daily drivers consist of Chevy Caprice with LT1 (94-96), and I happened to have a A/C bypass pulley sitting around just in case I ever had that problem on my LT1. This turned out to be the answer. The pulley is 5" rather than 5.5" like on the riviera compressor, but the belt tensioner more than compensated for that. The advantage of using this bypass pulley was that it had the proper spacing.

Here's what I used:
(1) A/C bypass pulley for a LT1 in a chevy caprice (among other things)
-dorman part #34209
(2) 10mm x 1.50 x 45 bolts
(4) 10mm flat washers
(2) 10 mm lock washers

Note: The bypass pulley I used had holes that were not threaded like the A/C compressor is. That is why the longer bolts and washers/nuts are needed.

Just to add to SuperM's findings, I just bought a 95 riviera with a seized a/c compressor. I had no luck in tracking down a used one so I went to Autozone with Dorman part #34209 and got that bypass pulley. Surprisingly, the pulley I got was threaded and bolted up using factory hardware. The pulley itself is a little smaller but works fine. Thanks for the help SuperM and good luck to anyone else in desperate need of a cheap a/c bypass.

I was going to say, it looked real close to the LT1 bypass I used in my S10.

To anyone doing this mod, I received a car that had it done. The bypass pulley seems to have not held up well, it squeaks and squeaks. Also you need to unplug the connector on the AC lines behind the passenger headlight, or your cooling fans will work funny. When you unplug it the fans run at low speed at all times, but that's better than it overheating.
