II lost overdrive while driving on the interstate. When I got home I noticed that
first was gone also. Only 2nd and 3rd are functioning. I did a search and noticed that a solenoid controls 1st and 4th. Is it hard to replace? Any thoughts on the number of hours involved?

I'm not a Transmission rebuilder by trade but (I did stay at a Holiday inn last night) have paid to have some work done on that part of the trans.
The left axle/drive shaft has to be removed to gain access to the left cover on the trans. Under that cover are the misc. valves and switches that can be replaced.
I paid $600.00 the last time i needed any work done in there.
Theres quite a bit of labor to gain access, left wheel, brakes, spindle and axle need to be removed, if I recall correctly.
That was at a shop labor rate of $72.00/hour

Unfortunately it is a lot of hours. To get the side case off involves quite a bit of labor. The solenoids are cheap in comparison.

Call around to a few different shops, see what they think the labor will run.

Good luck!

I called and got two quotes:

1) $376 plus $90 diagnostic fee ($466 total)

2) $700

This is a big labor fee for a $20 part.
