bent pushrod? Empty
PostSubject: bent pushrod?   bent pushrod? EmptyWed May 26, 2010 10:36 am

so i was told that the sc coupler should last about 25-30k miles. mine lasted 15k roughly. i did drop to a 2.5" pulley not sure if that makes a difference or not. is 15k to be expected or what? i figured while im getting my hands dirty i would change the valley gaskets too. so whats the difference between these two and can i use the performance set?

I changed my OEM coupler (Series II) around 100k miles, it was only slightly worn. My ZZP coupler has also seen at least 100k miles - still good so far. I have run 10-13% smaller SC pulley (same as you) for most of those miles. Are you sure the coupler is bad?

Those "performance" ones aren't right at all. Look at the runner spacing and the coolant passages. The first link Felpro ones are what I've used the past two times I did mine..

the oem was still on the car when i bought it at 109k. figured they would last awhile. oem was bad tho. im really only going on similar sound to last time. its a ticking/rattling sound. sounds coming from between the sc and rear bank. i thought at first it was lifter tick. i have been low on oil for a week or so. sound started few weeks ago. changed oil few hours ago. no change in sound. i was going to remove rear valve cover but looks like a pain. can i remove the cover and start motor without having oil squirt everywhere? something internal i should consider?

so after a few youtube videos. i think it may be a bent pushrod. is that common on these motors? how difficult is it to change?

The original engine in my riv had 99,900 on it when a rod bearing went (just couldn't make 100k). The couple had a good amount of play in it when I pulled the engine. My replacment engine with 60k on it has no play at all, but I don't know if the coupler is original or not.

make sure it's not just the injectors normal ticking that you can hear if the sight/sound shield is off.

red stuff is the permatex gasket from like 4-5 months ago changing the coupler. never finished scraping it all off. and the normal gm sc oil. the sound is closer to the throttle body. have looked inside and didnt see anything. would bad rotor bearings make that sound?

that's a nasty flutter you have there.
does the s/c spin freely with the belt off?

Have you taken a listen with a stethoscope (or even a long screwdriver) to pinpoint the sound?

If the rotor bearings are bad enough the rotors are hitting the wall of the blower then yes. Next time you pull the blower off, take a look at the rotors for chipped coating and the inside of the blower for score marks.

Also sounds like a messed up rocker arm. have you had a close listen to the valve covers?

see at first i thought the coupler because the sound was not very loud. but as it got louder. i figured dry rocker because i was alittle low on oil. changed my oil next day not luck. then i thought hey could be a bent pushrod. i have been on it alittle rough lately. used long screwdriver against my chin trick and the sound seems to becoming from the rotor bearings area. i ordered the bearings should be here thursday. will be pulling the sc off this weekend. just kinda trying to get some suggestions.

Certainly doesn't sound like a rod knock. It's definitely NOT the coupler. It possibly could be a lifter/rocker tick. As Matt said, use a stethoscope, or the long screwdriver method to pinpoint it and go from there.
