PostSubject: air intake question   Intake ideas EmptyThu Apr 10, 2008 8:58 pm

i found this cold air intake supposed to fit any riviera on ebay but it is really cheap, is this just a good deal or is there some reason why it is so cheap? here is the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/92-04-Buick-Park-Ave-LeSabre-Riviera-3-8L-V6-Air-Intake_W0QQitemZ230239182683QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item230239182683

please get back to me with your opinions on this intake, it doesnt seem bad b/c there arent any hard bends to restrict flow but i dont know much about filters

It's a pretty good deal. I started with that and added to it. It's not the coldest air you can get but it will give you improved flow for sure and it's an easy install

I have a replacement KN filter for sale for 25 shipped. Theyre normally like 50 or something new. unless you get a paper filter , but the KN filters have longer change intervals.

Meh, its a warm air intake by definition so you're not really doing much better than the stock box. If you're not into designing a PVC intake, you could order some intake tubing by the foot like this kind offered by ZZP. That way you can get the filter down into the fenderwell and the cool air.

How hard would it be to buy this kit and then build a heat shield for it to make it into more of a cold air intake? I think for 20 bucks its a good start but would need some finishing touches.

Similar to what Matt suggested, id reccomend just getting some 3.5" intake tubing from ZZP or intense:
http://intense-racing.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=IR&Product_Code=AIR-xx0&Category_Code=3800_Induction

The flexible tubing is a quick, cheap, and effective way to do a CAI. Of note is that you don't need a coupler or anything to get 3.5" intense tubing on the 95 sc throttlebody, as it can be squeezed on and pipeclamped. Then all thats needed is a cone filter for the other end.

The 4" piping will require some grinding or cutting of the stock hole to the fenderwell in order to fit, plus as Andrew said the 4" requires a coupler to hook onto the TB. The 3.5" on the other hand should squeeze in without trouble. It's just up to you, the 4" tubing will allow for better airflow, but will require that extra work. This is where your personal choice comes into play happy As for length, TonySmooth89 should be able to help with a more accurate number since he is running a similar setup.

Removing the airbox is very easy. For a good explanation check out this thread:
https://rivperformance.editboard.com/series-ii-engine-transmission-f4/write-up-gutting-the-air-box-t680.htm?highlight=gutting

After that's gone, all you would have to do is take the intake tubing you purchased, make a mock-up between the TB and fenderwell, and figure out the length necessary. Then cut the tubing to size, clamp to the TB, and put on the cone filter and you're done. Unfortunately to get the filter on you will have to remove the fender lining above the wheel but it's no big deal. Can you perform the job at a friends place?

Well that thread was just to explain how to remove the box, I'm not exactly sure but it should be the same for '95s as for '96-'99s (Karma chime in here). You could do it in a parking lot or something i suppose, you would just need a ratchet and socket set to remove the airbox, something to cut the piping with, and a tool to remove the fender lining pins (someone suggested a good tool in another thread but i cant seem to find it).

It's really simple when you get down there. Loosen a wing nut to get intake pipe off, and 2 bolts for the box if i remember correctly.

yeah, the procedure is the same for the 95 air box. The two bolts holding it down can be taken out with a simple socket set. For the 95, you only need like 2 feet of intake tubing. For the fender pins, i just used a set of pliers(carefully). Make sure your ties are all the way turned to the right, and you can access the fenderwell n/p. I did my intake in 45 min in the rain, so its really not too hard. Besides the tubing and the filter, the only other fiddly bit besides some pipe clamps would be a short bit 3.5" pipe to go between the filter and the hose.

I wouldn't use 4 inch on a 95... It seems like it would be pretty overkill.

But yeah every mod i do is usually something i considered beyond my abilities , so just dont let it intimidate you. Its not that hard.

And FYI you only need 2' of piping.

FWIW that intake will not serve you any better than the a gutted stock airbox. The stock airbox does even better because it has holes aligned with holes in the inner fenders, so it's even by default a FWI. I pulled my airbox out and put some 1" foam window insulation around the holes to force it to pull air from the FW, but even so the fenderwell is open to the engine compartment on the bottom.

But still, the point is, you will only be changing the sound. Don't do this for performance gains.
