So im going to Rebuild the tired old supercharger snout soon because she's clunk'n pretty bad. im doing the viton seal, bearings, and intense coupler of course, however can someone explain what the needle bearing is?? I have found the needle bearing grease but im not sure what kind of attention this part needs during the rebuild. can someone please elaborate?

Needle bearings can be purchased from ZZP, listed under "rebuild parts". Keep in mind you will need a hydraulic press to remove and install the bearings. There is a good chance your bearings are fine. If the coupler is worn, it will make quite a bit of noise.

Needle bearings also often come pre-greased. Just press them in with a press and you are good to go. Also to remove the old ones, it works well to drill, tap, and thread in grease nipples, and pump them out with grease. (also, FYI, they are at the back of the blower case, not in the snout.) Doing the snout bearings are more involved than the needle bearings, and often people just leave them or purchase some low miles rotor packs with better bearings.

Images of the procedure are here: (m62, but process is the same:)

(post 11: I press in new needle bearings)

Or also there are images and process here:

thanks for the input, keep in mind that im a mechanic on aircraft arresting gear in the Marine Corps so my shop has a unlimited supply of tools ( including a hydraulic press ) so if the needle bearings need to be pressed in that won't be a problem, also if the snout bearings are a matter of being pressed out I can do that to. I plan on just bringing the snout into the shop and doing the rebuild there. also thanks for the links they really helped clear things up.

Ah, I just noticed the needle bearings are part of the rotor housing. I did not plan on going that in depth with the rebuild so I probably leave those alone for now, I'll replace those when I have the SC off the car.

Yup, the snout get pressed out too. Its usually more then most can do, but with a full shop you will be golden. Most guys just press in the needle bearings to the depth of a dime height, but I measured my stock depth and made a bar in the lathe so the new ones went in exactly as stock.

Don't touch the bearings in the rotor pack. They require machining to get out properly, and most people who have tried to change them seem to run into problems with rotor flutter later.

Edit: yes, the needle bearings are in the rear and need to be done with the SC off the car.(always a great time to port and polish too! smile
