I always though a Camaro SS hood scoop would look cool on a Riv.

The trick would be to route the air to the SC. Might look real nice though.

You might want to look at getting the the type of dual scoops that were on the '70 Buick GS. There was a Reatta owner that installed these on his car and they looked good. If I remember correctly they were from a muscle car parts book.

I don't like that one. I do think something like the Camaro scoops would look good.

Would love to see it. I've though about a hood scoop and would love to have one but its going to have to be custom molded on there and made FOR the Riv. Or else its not going to look good IMO.

agree

It'll have to be designed by someone with Chip Foose art skills too. I don't think the Camaro scoop would look good either. It is next to impossible to make any visual change to the Riv and not hurt the styling.

Hood Scoops / Intakes Empty
PostSubject: Hood scoops   Hood Scoops / Intakes EmptySun Jan 11, 2009 11:45 pm

Due to a post in the For Sale section I got to thinking about something I saw sometime back. On my Craigslist I saw this Grand Prix:
Spoiler:
Now given you didn't cheat and right click and look at the properties of the pictures, you might have noted that that hood scoop is somewhat familiar to another car...
Spoiler:
Now my question - how did they do this? Certainly they're not interchangable so how did this get put on that GTP? I think it would be neat to get a cool hood like that or something with a scoop and do the same process to make it fit on the Riviera. Only thing, the grill might complicate matters but if you made the hood curve the way the stock one does then you could make it fit. Can a body shop put a real hood scoop on your car like that one if you brought it to them - not just some lame stick on from Autozone? I'm not sure the Riv would look right with a hood scoop so if someone is good with photoshop and would like to take a whack at it feel free too.

Here are some photos of my car if anyone would like to take a whack at photoshopping that hood scoop on (or any other you think looks good) NOTE: Dated pictures, but I don't gather that matters much for the hood scoop.
Spoiler:

PostSubject: Custom Ram Air Intake?   Hood Scoops / Intakes EmptySun Jan 29, 2012 7:59 pm

Okay, so in the months Iv'e spent scouring through this site at random intervals, it seems that Nobody really has a perfect intake setup. I'm proposing an idea that I may very well get flamed like no other for; a hood scoop. If I were to build my own custom intake, I'd want the cleanest, coldest air possible, so I'm thinking I'd have a setup where I'm going to have a 4 inch strong plastic pipe go from the intake manifold to the hood scoop with a heat shield around the air filter, wrapped in insulation, and finally inside a chrome-like metal pipe for both looks, and further insulation. I drew a crappy sketch of how I might have a hood scoop look on this car, and I figured I'd ask the Riv fanatics what they thought about a hood scoop (MOSTLY for performance aspects, this is why it's in engine tech) and also whether or not my idea looked too ricey.

Hood Scoops / Intakes 34025710150521549362169

Here's my sketch. I'd be going for a blacked out look, possibly custom halo lights if I can manage it, keep in mind, I'm no artist. anyone else can feel free to suggest other hood scoop mod types, but I like how subtle this is and how well it goes with the body lines. I want to keep the Riv having it's classic, timeless looks, and wouldn't even propose this if there were better intake options available for our car. It is my understanding that the best possible intake system setup is one of the best possible ways to reduce KR, and since I have an NA engine, KR will be a hard fight when I add the supercharger razz

It can certainly be done. Can it be done well? That's up to you, or who you have do the work. I would argue that doing a hood scoop on our car is mainly an aesthetic mod, because there are other sources for cool air intake.

Remember when working with the hood - it's aluminum. Also remember you can get cool, clean air from under the car, or just from the fender well, as a few here have found. I've noticed at any speed aside from idling while stopped, my intake temp is at or a couple degrees below ambient, which is all I can ask for.

Hmm, would the hood scoop in the setup I described perform better than a fenderwell intake, in theory, or is it not even worth it? I see problems with having the air filter so low is that asphalt radiates a lot of heat, so if you're starting off with really hot air like that, won't it have adverse affects on acceleration from a stand still?

EDIT:

imo,not being an engineer, the flow of air over the rivs nose kinda negates the addition of a hood scoop.air flow over the rounded & slanted nose, with a air scoop(naca) will have very little gain over a bottom mounted air scoop if any.
A bottom mounted scoop is way more efficient than any hood scoop will ever be(Big fat blown Plymouths & Stangs not included)

Air from hot asphalt imo would be Inconsequential. At idle the cars revs drop and so do it's air requirments.

If this is true, then I'm definitely not doing a hood scoop. All that time spent making my terrible sketch for nothing, lol. looks like I might just follow AA's guide on his fenderwell intake razz

by the way, would I gain anything with all that insulation I mentioned? wrapping a plastic intake tube in insulation, then putting that in a metal pipe for looks as well, would that even perform better than regular plastic?

robotennis61 wrote:

so stepping on it would instantly decrease intake temps, and the hot intake temps at idle won't affect engine lifespan? Because I spend a lot of time in the city I grew up in, stop and go traffic might be bad.

On the contrary my friend.I like your design.I've never seen one in that area. It's a great idea and could work aesthetically.
But dont take my word for it.Do a little research on your own and make a determination. It's a whole lot cheaper and less intrusive to plan a kick ass bottom mount scoop and pass it on to the rest of us.With your ideas I'm sure you can make it happen.

Stop and go traffic wont make a ton of difference. The Rivs cast iron engine can take the heat along with good quality oil. with a low mounted air intake your only concern is deep puddles of water.
On my old 88 Legend I had a block off plate that I would instal on the scoop in case of heavy rain back east.the few times I forgot to put it on or was too lazy to get out the car did not affect the engine performance at all or cause any problems. A super charged car is a whole other beast. It's gulping down big air,so...

Thanks for the kind words smile

Ironically, the inspiration I got for making that intake setup was the Viper, which has always been my favorite car, since I even have memories. I spent about 3 hours sitting at a table thinking of what kind of intake hood scoop setup I'd even attempt on the Riv, then ended up drawing this little triangle after 200 failed attempts razz

Comparison:

Hood Scoops / Intakes 34025710150521549362169

Hood Scoops / Intakes Viper_gts_1996_1

But yeah, if I actually can get an improvement in CFM though the heads from my design, I'd love to do it, and make an imprint of my favorite car of all time into my riv in an extremely subtle way razz

do it.the whole point of it all is to get out and do something different.I am sure you can find a source for aluminium naca scoop that can be welded in place.do a mock up before cutting into the hood first.
