4T60-E and 4T65-E Empty
PostSubject: 4T60-E and 4T65-E   4T60-E and 4T65-E EmptyMon Jan 30, 2012 9:17 pm

Hi all,
If you read my intro post, you know that I just bought a 95 NA. This car is as much a base model as the luxury Riviera gets. Anyway, it was really cheap because the tranny is bad, but it came with a replacement to drop in. The seller assured me he checked the connectors and they were the same. I dunno, maybe he was drunk when he did. They definitely do *not* match up. In fact, the replacement had "GM-B 24204411 902" stamped on the side. I looked it up -- that's the 4T65-E (dunno if it's HD).

Does anyone know what kind of headache is involved in trying to swap these? Do I need to just start looking for the correct tranny?

One thing that's different:
4T60-E and 4T65-E Transm10
The lever arm in the middle of that picture is replaced by something electronic on the 4T65-E.

Any advice or direction will be welcome.

I think you would need to add wires from the trans to the pcm and swap your current pcm out for a replacement from a year that has the 4T65. If your car is supercharged the best bet is a PCM for a '97. If not, you'd need to change the wiring harness as the pinouts at the pcm are different. You will also need the '97 MAP sensor... and you'd need the VIN off the donor car in order to get the pcm to work.

Don't take my word for it, let's find out from someone who's already done this (please please). And do a google search on "swap 4t60e with4t65e" and see what you can find...

not a task for the un-motivated...

Thanks Albert. I'm not *that* motivated! My goal is go get the car back on the road, as quickly as possible, and my budget is ... how can I describe it ... ah yes, pitiful.
Perhaps I can sell the 4T65-E to purchase the correct transmission. It sounds like even a swap of the same transmission will be enough of a challenge!

Given where you are (W Va) it would not surprise me if a local auto recycler would pretty much trade you that transmission for the 4t60. You could also contact Ed Morad (moradpartscompany.com) to get a sense of if a trade would be sensible to an auto parts recycler. I am thinking $200 to $500 from a local wrecker for straight cash; depending on the condition of your transmission maybe less $$. Maybe a straight trade from a u-pull. Who knows.

That's an idea. Even if it's not a straight up trade, if I can come close it will help. car-part.com says there's a junk yard nearby with a 4T60E in stock; maybe I can make a deal.
