ok a couple of days ago my passenger side door handle broke. so tonight i decided that i was going to fix it and i got the door panel off and then removed the bolt on the left and right side of the door handle. after this i am lost i just cannot figure out how to get it the rest of the way off. this is my first time removing a door handle, so detailed instructions would be great and even pictures would be amazing.

...first -- unless you have machining skills to execute the repairs shows on the web page link that was earlier in this thread, you have to buy a replacement handle from a junkyard or parts place. A good way to go is rockauto.com, they have replacement handles that will work 100%, and others (I think Advance Auto, O'Reilly's) have them available too... The GM dealers can get them for you too but they will cost you almost $100 each there...

Next, you have to remove the remote rods from the handle when you have the door panel and water/noise shield off. Otherwise you can't turn the handle to get it out of the door. Basically the clips that hold the remote rods in place snap away, but be careful and watch out because the plastic gets brittle with age. You may want to practice by going to a pick-and-pull junkyard and removing a door handle from any similar GM car. The Riv and Aurora had unique handles but if you go practice on a junker you'll get the gist of how it's done. There should be lots of Luminas and Impalas with similar handles at your regional pick-and-pull-it-yourself junkyard that you can try.

Anyway...

With the remote rods off then remove the 2 bolts that hold the handle on the door skin.

Then you can get the handle out by basically pressing it with your fingers from the backside of the door and turning it so it comes free of the door skin. Be careful not to scratch or dent the door skin. If you go to the junkyard and practice you will already have the hang of how to do this.

Last word: If you are going to be doing this kind of work with this car you're best off getting your own service manual set. They are not too pricey on eBay and come up for sale pretty often. And instructions for stuff like this are in there.

Hope its not too late... Just in case you didnt know or havent read it someplace else, the 95-96 handles were different from the 97-99 handles, so make sure you get the right one! i got mine from a 98 Aurora.
