bearing noise Empty
PostSubject: bearing noise   bearing noise EmptySat Sep 28, 2013 8:59 pm

Straight to the point:

1. I only hear this noise when the car is warmed up.
2. Its comingfrom the left side of the engine (passenger)
3. Used a giant screwdriverto listen to supercharger, waterpump, and alt. (Couldntreach powersteering.)
4..waterpump seems to be significantly louder that the alt and sc.
5 as ive said I only hear it while driving and the cars warmed up to operating temperature. Better still, I hear it while accelerating, not at idle.

Tips? Clues

Try taking off the S/C belt and see if the noise goes away. will rule out about half the bearing that normally go bad.

It's probably one of the accessory pulleys. Could be a tensioner or idler pulley. Remove belts and turn/wiggle each pulley to check for squeaks/slack. Good luck.

I took one belt off ata time. First the supercharger, still heard the noise. Then the accessory belt....still heard the noise. I did notice a noisefrom the powersteering, but its a completely different noise... sounds like its coming from within the engine

If its a sort of whining sound, like power steering, it could be the oil pump in the transmission. When old, the seals inside the trans can become leaky when warm. The pump works harder, so makes noise - or so I've been told. Mine did that for 50k or so before rebuild. Not much I could do about it.

Yes! Exactly, sounds like powersteering, but from elsewhere. I rev it neutral when warmed up, I hear it too, like a whirring powersteeering noise. How would a bearing gone bad in the engine sound?

If it's the trans it should come from driver side more than passenger. I was thinking harmonic balancer, but that's more of a knocking sound, and would cause vibration.

Difficult to say if it's the same noise, based on the descriptions given.

Shifting into N or P may rule out the transmission.

Turning off engine while rolling off may rule out engine and supercharger.

If it's audible will idling in park, a mechanic's stethoscope can help pinpoint the exact source of the noise. You may be surprised to find the sound isn't coming from where you think, or it could be exactly where you think. Trick is to be sure before you go changing things. This avoids extra cost and the risk of causing more damage. Best of luck.
