Subject: Spray on Chrome? Almost. Mon Feb 10, 2014 10:01 am
My car came with 12 spoke chrome wheels, but no center caps. I can't find OEM chrome caps so I purchased some silver painted I plan to spray chrome. I'll let you know how it works out. Check out these videos of the process:

This looks like a process I've seen before. Not much info on the Website.

I've seen it before, went and looked at the website this time, it looks like it works pretty good but $350 for a starter kit might be just a little too much?!? I need a couple interior pieces in my '93 redone and that looks like it would work, just don't know if it is worth all that?

Yeah,$350 is almost as much as getting them re-chromed by a pro, right?

It depends... If your going to use it on a daily-driver, I doubt it. For a garaged weekend cruiser, I think it will last a good while. That's just my guess.

It's got to be just as durable as enamel or urethane I would think

It's been a few weeks, but I think I remember finding a supplier somewhere that sold the solutions I need for under $100. I can buy hand pumped spray bottles and high gloss black and clear coat paint in shaker cans at the hardware store, as well as deionized water at my local supermarket. It looks like most of the work will be in the prep, but I was lucky that the center caps I purchased are in pretty good shape. I'll set aside my project for now, but I'd like to get on it next week. Might make a good write up. As far as how long the finish will last, I suppose that has to do with the nature of the clear coat, the amount of abrasion, and exposure to caustic chemicals over time. In other words, I have no idea excet to say your mileage may vary. I have aftermarket chromed center caps with no "R" logo on my Riv right now, so that's my fallback in case this project goes wrong.
He also sells a kit with a lot of stuff I won't need. The kit is $150, but the 3 chemical solutions alone are just $75. I will have to buy base coat and a clear coat shaker cans, and in addition four plastic hand pump spray bottles from the local Home Depot. One for the distilled water, for the activator, for part A solution, and for part R solution. In all it should cost me less than $100 to do all four of the center caps. The source for the solutions is in Thiland, so I don't know how long it will take for delivery. but I still have to prep the center caps to make them perfectly smooth, so I have time.
