PostSubject: need some troubleshooting!   need some troubleshooting! EmptyTue Jul 31, 2007 2:34 pm

i rarely have any problems with my riv, but today i just want to kill it! i was going to get gas just now and at some point in the trip i lost power, not all, just some. it felt as if all my timing was being pulled, yet the car sounded fine. it wouldn't accelerate over 3krpm, even in N, nor would it down shift like it is supposed to. so i limped it into the gas station, filled her up and popped the hood. NO S/C BELT!! it can completely off and was wedged up by the a/c compressor frown well at least i know why it felt so slo. it was still intact, but i didnt have any tools with me. so i limped it home (1/2mi away) and put the belt back on.
started it up and everything squeaks. all of my pulleys are "new" but they sounded like they were out of grease. i look under the car and im loosing coolant from the a/c compressor frown a/c worked fine on the way home btw.(tho i should have tuned it off)
so my question to you is;
1. can i drive it home (200mi) friday? (my lease ends at noon headbutt ...this couldnt have happened next week? gripe
2. what would make the belt fly off like that? its not even cut up suspect
3. can i borrow someone elses riv for the week happy
4. anyone know where i can get a new compressor? (if thats what i need)
5. anything else i should check?
TIA,
Matthew

update; the coolant leak is from a small hole in the lower radiator hose, thank God! i'll fix it tomorrow after this storm!
i'll check the compressor out tomorrow also.
hopefuly the belt came off due to a wet pulley.

I feel this whole thing may have been caused by the leaky A/C compressor. Perhaps the condensation from the leak caused the belts to become wet and slip off? If they're still wet, that could explain the noise.

I wouldn't drive it 200 miles until I got those pulleys to stop making noise, but it's your ride. A/C compressor will need replaced, I'd buy it new if you can afford it.

I've zip-tied the SC belt off to the side on occasion in order to make long trips without worries. You must slip the belt off the crank and pull tight against the engine mount bracket, then wrap the belt around something in the engine bay. Make sure nothing rubs! Or, if belt is damaged, just cut it. frown

My S/C belt flew off one time and it was in good condition. What happened was my s/c was leaking from the snout and greasing up my belts and pulleys. This caused both of belts to slip.

It could be similar in your case. Is the coolant getting on the belts and pulleys? If so this could maybe cause them to squeek also.

However when my s/c belt was off the engine still reved normally, the car was just A LOT slower.
