I just had a new alternator put in a 97 Riviera. I also had the serpentine belts replaced and the tension adjuster. The car makes a squeaking sound similar to chirping. Does anyone have an idea what is causing this? Thanks for the help.

welcome to the forum. We'll need more info on your car. Mileage? Have the idler AND tensioner pulleys been changed ?

My father's GTP and gf's 98 regal gs' pulleys started squeaking at about 70k miles. Members have reported pulley failure at approx 85k miles. They are cheap and easy to change, except the lower supercharger idler on the G-bodies (the riviera is a g-body).

welcome! my water pump started squeeking at 120k miles. you should take off the s/c belt and see if the noise goes away. that will isolate which area is failing. but like jason said, our pulleys seem to all go out at the same mileage (~90k)

I got a minor chirp after replacing my belts, too. It only lasts a few seconds when I start up. Does yours happen all the time? Does it only chirp, or is it more of a grinding/whining sound?

Thanks for all of the help! The car has about 103k miles. The car is also supercharged. The car seems to chirp when I first turn the car on. It also chirps while driving while driving. Thank again everyone for the help.

Welcome to the forum! I would make sure the belt is on correctly and check all of the pulleys are installed correctly and are in good shape.

Welcome!

One question...Was it squealing before the alternator was replaced?
The reason I ask is that I was about to replace my alternator due to squeaks and squeals and then noticed the telltale weeping from below the W/P. It was my water pump all along. No noise since.

It actually all started when I was driving one day, and my power steering locked up. The engine started to over heat. I quickly pulled over the car. The serpentine belt broke, and had been ripped to shreads. I had to replace the alternator. I then had one of the tenioners replaced.

I had the belt replaced several times, the last time with a belt designed for the riviera. Stil a chiping sound. Alas.... this is my story.
