| Sometimes, when I go to close the cupholders, the cover doesn't just slide back when I press it in again. I have to sorta lift it up to get it to slide back after pushing it in. Is there a certain point I should be pressing, or is this a common problem? Thanks for your help! | |

| Probably common with age and use. Mine resists a bit as well. | |

| I'd just pop it out and inspect the mechanism. The center part above the door comes out pretty easily with a firm pull (and disconnect cig lighter). _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

| if the latch is still working right you can replace the spring. Get one from Carquest the same size but firmer. Last I checked they have 'em as 'shop parts.'

| mine was covered with dried coffee when I bought my car. Works fine after a good disassembly/clean/reassembly. The cleaning part was rather disgusting.
(the little CD holders under the ashtray were in the same condition)

| Just to let you guys know, I have a 1995 with the factory radio where the tape deck and radio are on the top, then the ashtray, then the CD player, then the cupholder panel at the bottom. I don't feel comfortable with ripping the cover out, and don't know how to do it properly anyway. I know there are 3 or 4 different radio/dash configurations. | |

| In my 95, I have some diffuculty keeping the cup holder open. A bump in the road would release it back. It stinks sometimes when I have the iPod going. The Shuffle sits right next to the shifter and makes it way into the cupholder. When I grab for it...*snap*, my hand falls victim to the cup holder door trap. I found a way to keep it open though. There's a notch where you have to rest the piece of the plastic holder on. Now has anyone lost a CD or 2 in the dark thinking the cup holder cover housing was the CD player opening? I think I have 2 CD's just chillen in there. I'll get them eventual but I guarantee they don't work now. Burned CD's never last too long. | |

| Mine's ac tually the opposite lol, when mine is back, it's sometimes a pain in the ass to get it to release.. but now when I open it to put cups in it, I just don't lock it all the way back and let it put pressure on the cup which holds it nicely. My ipod has a silicone skin on it and it just sits steady on the flat area next to the shifter so I never really open mine | |

(the little CD holders under the ashtray were in the same condition) I had the great experience of cleaning mine out today.. The carpet was stained brown from coffee or coke and underneath the foam in the 2 cup holders was thick brown resin which I imagine is 13 years of caramelized syrup from cokes that have created a gooey resin underneath the foam. I got em all goo gone clean and they look great now. Had a hell of a time with that stupid console though. The 2 metal tabs that 'pinch/hold' the screw in place were the devil's idea! edit for photos to gross all yalls out!

| Looks like you got the trim piece out, what happend with the stubborn screws? Also, while you have everything out, do you mind taking a pic of the underneath of the cupholder cover mechanism, you know the part that slides up and down covering the cup holders? | |

| I believe the material, or at least a lot of it, under the felt liners, is a soft rubbery non-drying sticky compound intended to hold the liners in place when you pull out a bottle/cup. I had a little soda accident with mine this summer, and removed the liners for cleaning also. There's definitely a factory-applied compound on the bottom side of the liners. Much like the rubbery stuff that holds new credit cards in place on the form letter they send them out on. | |

Sacrifices had to be made.. When I first gave up on the screw driver and then the pliers I got out the drill. I had it nice and centered and had the screw spinning but it wasn't coming up. plastic tabs lost their lives that day I am going to work on the console again Friday so I will certainly get a picture or 2 for you, - 1998 Riv wrote:

I noticed the yellows glue stuff that holds them down but there was a lot more than just that sticking them into place! When I am ready to put them back in i plan on using the touch of a glue stick to achieve the same effect. Something that will keep it from coming up with a cup but not permanently holding them in place making cleaning impossible.

if you look in a store that sells tapes and stuff (walmart, staples, hope depot, etc) you'll see 3M transparent 'adhesive squares' intended for posters, they are removable-reusable-re-positionable and would work for this.

| I use meters a lot, and the holder doesn't hold much change. And the cup holder is more convenient to grab. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |
