| Driving earlier on my way home from work, I started hearing a squeaking noise and I wasn't sure of where it was coming from, so I stopped and popped my hood. I didn't find the source of the squeaking there, but I did notice a sound almost like a slight knocking now and then, like something was rattling around or like an old bearing or something and it souded like it was coming from the blower but it was hard to tell.. I put my hand on it and could feel the vibration whenever it made the sound but then again, it could be from anywhere.. any ideas? are there any known problems like this that stem from the blower? | |

| coupler bearing. Mine went out recently on the old M90. Sounded like a rattling can when the car was cold. Got quiet when it warmed up. It's an inexpensive part 25-30 and easy to change. I didn't have to worry about replacement when I switched over to the GV. | |

| I don't know if I'd call it an easy job, but it can be done in a few hours. You must remove the alterator and SC snout. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

| I drove with mine like that for 2 years (about 50-60k miles). The coupler was only slightly worn, still in good shape. After changing it, there's still some noise, just not as much. With an air intake added, it's normal to hear the "grinding marbles" sound on start-up because the BBV is opened when the engine is cold. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

| No. In my case, there was no reason to change it other than the noise. And for the difference it made, I don't know if it was worth the effort. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

| Ryan, you can double check that it is the coupler by removing the belt and rocking the pulley back. feel for any slack in the rotors. _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | 15mm socket and torque it away from you (reverse thread bolt) to loosen the tesnion and slip off the belt. _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. I would gladly trade with you! For the series 1 the entire supercharger has to be removed and taken apart. It is all practice. Once you do enough of them then you can do it in under and hour for the m90, and under 2 hours for a series 1 m62. Look at the bright side, it is the only part in the supercharger that actually needs maintenace every 100k miles. | |

http://www3.sympatico.ca/aepa/blowerinstall.html using that link, it took me a couple hours max working by myself and never having done anything like it. didnt even have the right tools or a garage. definitely an easier fix on this car. And good excuse to change out your SC oil. | |

| Just changed my blower oil.. that has to be the worst thing i've ever smelled in my life... anyways, while the hood was popped, I took off the belt and spun th pulley a bit, I was able to move it about half an inch before it seemed to hookup, would that be the play from a broken coupler? | |

| wow 1/2" of play would be the most i've ever heard of for a worn coupler. i'm betting that is where all of the sound is coming from. if you want a hand changing it, let me know _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | not really, it may cause boost to radically fluctuate coming off throttle, but during acceleration the coupler is still doing its job unless it has completely broken apart (never heard of it) _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | They tend to wear and then rattle, instead of actually breaking. It's only about $30 for a new and improved couple from ZZP. Might want to consider changing it since you're working on the SC anyway. | |
