I also had crappy tires when I got my Riv, Yokohama Avids that were cracking all over the sidewalls. Fair amount of tread left, when one busted a belt. Good reason to ditch them all, and got the TA's. Same here, 10X the tire the Avids were. And of course, there's other tires that are probably equally better than the TA's. It's all relative.

Aaron, thanks for the comments on the Firehawks, I'll have to rethink that idea.

One thing to keep in mind when tire shopping - always look at the speed rating. That will weed out some POS tires and keep you into decent ones. It means they can dissapate heat at higher speeds, usually means a stiffer tire as well just by design.

PostSubject: Re: FAQ: Which tires work best?   tires fit - FAQ: Which tires work best? - Page 3 EmptyTue Apr 22, 2008 3:25 pm

I just bought a set of 4 Uniroyal TIger Paw Touring, T-series. A new design from Michelin. 2 ply polyester carcass, 2 steel belts, 1 Rayon belt. About $450 out the door, roll smooth although I may take them to a local shop that has a Hunter 9700 to remount, get rid of a slight vibration. They are grippy and quiet. Was told they are not so good in the snow - but I have snows (Goodyear Ultra Grip ICE) so I don't care so much. Replaced a set of Michelin X-DTs I'd been rolling on (summers) since 2003.

Thanks for all your comments so far on tires - keep it up!

Albertj

Update - the Tiger Paw Touring TRs were great spring/summer/fall touring tires. The slight vibration is probably due to tire construction, goes away after driving a few miles. I was told that Michelin has a habit of putting for instance rayon cap fabric over the belts to reduce radial force variation - rayon tends to flat spot when car is parked - but I have no way to verify that without destroying a tire so truth is I dunno. Bottom line is I think these are *great* 'daily driver' tires.

What do you guys know about Sumitomo tires? Sears is having a sale Buy 3 get one free and I found some Ultra High Performance All Season ones for $63. These: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Sumitomo&tireModel=HTR%2B

They seem to be a decent tire, especially for the price, but I'm a little skeptical.

you get what you pay for. so thats $63 +tax, disposal, road haz, rotation/balance,valve&caps...looking like about $85-90 per tire. how much were the BFG traction T/A's at sears? if you have a local BJ's (like sams club, cosco, etc) they have tire cheaper than anywhere else i've seen.

Well, I just have some used tires on there right now, so it could definitely wait. I was thinking that it wouldn't be worth it. I'll just wait and get some nicer tires. I just wanted somebody to prove me wrong, so I felt better about purchasing something pricier.

Need to replace my oem tires and am looking for suggestions. What have you bought, and how do you like em. I use the Rivie for highway travel and look for good traction, but also QUIET running treads.

I was very happy when I had Michelin Pilots on. I think they were something like XGA H4 (edited I found the old tire name). Good tires for everything except snow IMO.

My car came with Goodyear Eagle LS (Luxury/Sport) I like them, they handle decent in the turns but ride nice and quiet on the highway.
I needed to replace two of them 2 years ago and stayed with the same model.
While i was at the Goodyear dealer though i noticed and talked to the manager about a newer tire that had come out that was supposed to have the same performance rating yet supposed to be smoother and quieter. Don't remember the model name now, but if you look at a Goodyear dealer you'll find them. They were about 150.00 - 175.00 per tire at that time for 225/60/16's.

I have the new Good Year Eagles and I love them. They handle great and are quiet as a mouse. They were expensive but well worth it.

Michelin Energy MXV4+ 235/60-16. They are slightly different size from stock (225/60-16). On the highway the speedometer will read about 3 mph less than actual. They are very quiet, work well in wet weather and I get 60,000 highway miles out of them. I am on my third set.

If you have dedicated winter tires I'd look at a Uniroyal deler, the Tiger Paw Touring - I currently run them. See http://www.uniroyal.com/about/articles/04012004A.html. They are quiet, work REALLY well in the wet and the dry.

I also used to drive on the Sams Club Michelin X DL, which although somewhat noisy they wore well and performed OK.

tread width effects speedometer readings?

No , however the way tires are rated , the second number ( in this case 60) is referencing to how tall the tire is in relation to the tread with. So a 255/55 is actually taller than a 225/60 , because second number is a percentage the height of the sidewall is in relation to the tread with.

Am i making sense? It's a little late for me to explain this kinda thing.

I use BFG Traction T/As. Very solid performing and good looking tire IMO , but they can be a tagetting used noisy on the highway. Seem to be quieting down as they break in but maybe i'm just to it.

I've got the good year integrity's and they absolutely suck. I will never buy these tires again for any car I own. Horrible winter traction and they are worse on wet pavement.

Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's.
Bought a set a few years ago for the Park Ave., and they are in my opinion the best tire I have ever owned.
They get high marks on the Tire Rack survey also.

I'd like to replace the BFG Radial TA's I have on the '70 with a set of Indy 500's.

I've owned Michelin tires in the past, but my experience has been they wear out way to quickly.

If you get the traction t/a tires, get the 97T ratings. They are rated the best on tire rack and my girlfriend has them on her 03 impala. They are great tires, we got them at walmart for 105$ a piece, you can order them on their website and site to store. The other traction ta tires didnt get good reviews, just the 97T. Im about to buy some for my riv.
