| i appologize if this has already been covered but i couldn't find this question specifically anywhere. Exactly how much servicable oil is in the s/c I had my buddy get me a bottle of the GM oil from the dealer he works at and it's 4oz. This seems like a tiny amount of fluid even for the small gearset. I remember seeing someone in here say it needs to be filled right to the plug. is 4oz enough? | |

| It is 8oz,
Btw if you are buying any aftermarket parts Intense-racing.com sells an 8oz bottle for 10 bucks. My last order added a bottle because I would need it at some point.

| well i just finished it and 6 very black and disgusting ounces of it came out and about 10 crystal clear pretty ounces went in. I also decided to do an experiment and rub all the old oil on my face to see what it does. jk btw did urs look really bad when you changed yours? (this question is directed to anyone who has changed it, no one specific) | |

| Yes! Smelled worse tho. Guess the good part about having a leaky s/c is it is constantly clean because I have to fill it often. | |

| it looks black/brown sorta like dirt brake fluid. as long as there are no suspended metal bits in it then your ok. 10oz is alot, make sure you check it after running it for a little bit to make sure its not too full(its a oil "bath" so a little bit too much shouldnt hurt). _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | the s/c oil is 30 wt synthetic. I have used Mobil 1 10/30 for years with no problem...I do however change it once a year, just for giggles | |

| SC oil and motor oil aren't the same. Not saying motor oil doesn't work, but why take the risk? _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |

I'm curious, where did you hear that? I'm pretty sure the oil in sc is different for the same reason that rear end lube, trans fluid, ATF, etc are all different. I would agree with AA, its not really worth chancing it. The only thing other than GM s/c fluid that i would use is the s/c fluid you can get at speed shops and such but its just as expensive so there's no point. I know my coworker, who works full time as a tech at Chevy, said he had someone come in with noise complaints in his s/c bonne and discovered that they put gear lube into the s/c a while back and it was bad news bears for that super. and i would think that gear lube is a little closer to s/c oil than engine oil myself.

| BTW I thought gear lube is thicker than sc oil and even motor oil. I think gear lube is 80/90, its pretty thick. | |

| yea, when i think gear lube i think of stuff like bearing grease. pretty heavy stuff, but maybe im wrong _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | and if you use the gm stuff is made to last a long time between changes(like 50k miles or more) every year is overkill IMO, even for a race car. _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | I believe that the GM oil used for the SC is a synthetic friction modifier. That's one of the reason is smells so bad. I also think it is the same modifier that GM puts in the rear differentials of CTS-V's, along with the gear oil. | |
