| Hello everyone. I'm kind of new to this site, as I've been lurking for a few months now. The first Riviera I had was an '89, black, bone stock. I bought that in late '99 and drove it nearly everyday until I got rid of it earlier this year. The biggest road trip that I took with that car was to visit one of my sisters in Phoenix, AZ. I took the scenic route heading accross Colorado and through the Rocky Mountains, then heading South near Arches National Park to hit I-40. Stayed at her place for a week and heading back but took the route through Oklahoma. That car did very well for that trip. Very comfortable for that amount of prolonged driving time too. Now I have a '99 Riviera. Dark blue, moonroof, power everything, 67k miles, and as stock as can be for that mileage. I like this car alot, the only thing is it took a little getting used to compared to driving the '89 which I drove for almost 10 years. The perceived width of the car and front end lenth were the too biggest tricks. I'm not looking to do any mods at this time, but this site is great for writeups and information regarding service. I've already used a few. Planned for the future are; KYB struts/mounts for the front (the factory are getting a little bouncy), changing to Autolite 605's, new wire set (the current stock ones have some wear on the wires in spots), brake pads and/or inspection, and a new fuel filter. Just mostly maintainence items. My other car is what I modify or wrench on. '87 Oldsmobile Cutlass, 403 ci. small block Olds, TH700R4 transmission, headers, 3.42 rear ratio limited slip.
Oh, I've lived in this area for the past 22 years, and have been working at my job for the past 8 1/2 years - R&E diesel mechanic/tech.
Cheers. | |

Cheers Welcome to the Forum I've had both also and you are right about the difference in driving them. I do think the last generation is a little smoother, and the gas mileage is comparable even though there is a pretty good difference in the size. Year ..Curb ..Wheelbase ...Track ........Length ...Width ....Height .........Weight ....Inches ...Front. Rear ...Inches ...Inches ...Inches 1989 .3364 ......108.0 .....59.9. 59.9 ......198.3 .....71.6 .......53.5 1999 .3788 ......113.8 .....62.5 .62.6 .......207.0 ....75.0 .......55.2

| Thanks for the kind welcome everyone. Now I'll answer a few questions that were posted in response to my initial posting.
I'd like to post some pictures sometime, but the truth is that I have never taken pictures of any cars I own, much less own a camera of any kind. I'll get my younger brother to take some pictures for me sometime soon though.
manofmany, I'm in the Columbus, IN area.
Yes 99Rivman, before searching for one I actually looked up the demensions to make sure it would fit in my garage with at least a little room to spare. The added width is the most noticable when pulling it in the garage. And last night I computed the fuel milage since I've owned it. Mixed driving with mostly city it's getting around 25mpg if I remember correctly. Taking a trip to Kings Island in Ohio early last month it looks like it averaged around 32mpg. Nice.
So far so good. This really is a great forum with a friendly member base. Nice write-ups and information too for a vehicle that isn't exactly all that popular. At least in the sense of modding, self service, etc. of course.
Cheers | |

Cheers If you are interested you could also look into the Riviera Owners Association: http://rivowners.org/index.html It is a club for all year Rivieras and a great bunch of people too. There are a few members of this forum in the ROA.
