Alternator pigtail question Empty
PostSubject: Alternator pigtail question   Alternator pigtail question EmptySat Oct 04, 2008 2:25 pm

The clip on the alt connection has been broke since I bought the car. I ordered a new one from Rock Auto. The new plug fits perfect but it has two 18 gauge wires and one 12 gauge wire. My current plug only has a green and red wire (old plug 2 wires new plug 3 wires)
My riv doesn't have the original motor but it is a series one 3.8L I believe it did come from another riv but not sure.
should I look for a third wire hidden away some where or is two normal??

Here is a link to the new pigtail.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Hey New Braunfels,
Used to live in San Antonio up until 2001. Have good friends in that area. Mostly motorcycle (HD) folks.
Names withheld upon request.
I miss the area a lot but.......
Anyway, What year is yours, There were 2 and 3 wire connectors made for different years. You obviously have a two connector setup. It's highly unlikely that a third wire is hiding on you. The charging system would not work properly if one wire were disconnected.

Love the area!!! moved here from Michigan in January of 2004, best move ever.
I'm still trying to figure out the whole signature thing but the car is a 1995 SC 141,000 miles. Do you know if it is possible to splice the two 18 gauge wires together??

NO, DON,T Splice.
Get proper connector. You can get those at local auto parts store such as NAPA.

Hang in a second. That is probably the right connector. Can you take a pic of the new connector and old side by side.

Most likely you need to hook the two wires straight up say one is connected to pin 2, then hook pin 2 of the new one to that wire and the other is in pin 3, hook that to pin 3 on the new connector.

The third wire is likely the S terminal of the altenator. If you can verify this and have noticed poor voltage on the car. There is a way to use that third wire to improve the situation.

I ended up using the two pins on the plug and taping up the third it works great! my scanner reads a pretty steady 14.1 volts. Thanks for the help!
