| hello, I'm getting a new engine finally for my 96 riviera, but i wanted to know if there is a list of parts on here or something to tell me what all i should replace - fuel lines? i know i need to change belts, but should i replace all the pulleys too? also, are there any special tools needed for this job? the replacement engine will come with the supercharger so no worries there - but do i need to put s/c oil in the new one? ps - i have been on this forum for a while - my screen name used to be 96rivgrlla but i guess it went inactive? | |

| Did your riv have a normal series II engine befor? how many miles has the new engine on it? i'm not so sure about the wiering. but. if the engine as more then 100.000miles? and you do not know any history of it. could be easy to change all the pulleys, just incase supercharger coplar/oil, engine oil/filter. and same tim you could change the gearboxes oil and filter tho. inspect if the engine as any oil leaks elsewhere. could be a good time to change the sealings there tho.
anyways lets hear some other guys tho....i'm kinda new to a V6 SC engine tho.

| I'd ask if this is a new engine or used.
If used, I'd suggest changing the LIM gaskets while the motor is not in the car. Use GM aluminum gaskets on the LIM, the rest are up to you.
Pullies are at your discretion, most are easy to get at except the one behind the torque axis or passenger side motor mount. That one I would recommend changing. New plugs and wires are nice to do.
Other than that...fresh coolant, new oil and filter..

| You are talking about regular maintenance items... and it depends why your original engine died in the first place. ??? | |

| so engine is used 80k miles - has 6 month warranty. my previous engine which is still in the car was s/c and this new engine has s/c with it too. i am 3rd owner, prev. motor had 98K miles on it - died because i had belt changed at GM dealer and somehow they snapped a couple months later so s/c was not working, the car was just running all motor so it just refused to move. the temp needle never moved from normal temp, so it didnt overheat. but anyway, do i need a torque wrench? my husband is gonna do the swap and ill be helping, anything particularly tricky i should know before i try to do it? thanks! | |

| Got to be more to this story. These cars definitely run without the S/C, just not run well or indefinitely.
Other than that I think BillBoost's answer is all you need for now. I would check to be sure that the gasket change does not void the 6month warranty you were given on the new engine. You might find out that the seller already replaced the LIM gasket and other stuff to avoid a come-back.

| At a minimum you need Volume 2 of the Factory Service Manual. It covers Engine, Trans, Emissions controls and Electrical. Has all the procedures for removing and replacing the engine, etc.
Just happen to have a copy of volume 2 for a 1996 for sale for $25.00 plus shipping. PM me if your interested.

| so more about the engine currently in the car - the s/c not working was only part of it I'm sure. I had gotten a tune up at jiffy lube and about 3 wks later the oil light came on - i assumed it was just a faulty sensor because the check engine had been on for months and every time i asked the oil people to check it with their machine, they said they couldn't figure out what it was and said something could be wrong with the EVAP system? anyway, yeah i should have check the oil - mind you this car blew like 3 years ago, so i am a lot smarter about cars now - i hope
also, the new engine is coming from a dismantler yard
I have the haynes manual for the riv and aurora - will that help or is the book rick w's talking about more in-depth?
Thanks! | |

| The Haynes books are okay. They should be able to get you through this swap. You will be SHOCKED at how much extra information comes with the FSM Rick is talking about. A totally worthwhile investment if you want to keep your car. | |

| There is one pain in the ass bolt from the engine to the trans that I've heard others talk about. I've never done the job myself so maybe someone who has can chime in and shed some light on this. If you forget or miss this bolt and try to lift engine free from trans you can break the trans case.!!! | |

Thanks! if its a light for the EVAP (probably code 1441) then its a minor problem that won't affect driveability. I get this code occasionally/rarely. IMO, the hayne manual is crap. The make one for the 3800 motor with an oldsmobile on the cover and it doesnt even have supercharged applications in it. Almost worthless to me.
