K@N air Empty
PostSubject: K@N air   K@N air EmptyWed Mar 04, 2009 7:23 pm

I own a 98 riviera, and wanted to replace the stock air filter with a drop in K@N air filter. But my father who is a auto mechanic says that the oil from the K@N air filter might damage the mass air flow sensor. Is this true?

I had no problems running a K&N drop in filter for 5,000 miles. I haven't seen anyone report anything on here about the K&N filter.

I'm currently using a 9" K&N cone which is oiled, of course, for the past 10k miles and no problems yet.

I wouldn't feel uncomfortable recommending it, but figure out where you want your car to be in the future as far as power goes. Because a gutted box with a K&N is more restrictive than a fenderwell intake (FWI) or a cold air intake.

In other words, don't waste your money on a $70 filter if you're just going to replace it later. I ended up selling my filter on here for half what I paid, because I was eager to start modding.

He is sorta correct. It could do exactly as he says. Probably the worst thing that would happen is it would dirty the MAF sensor and cause some rough idling or odd acceleration behavior.

However, I've been running a K&N filter for years with no trouble. The key is not to over oil the filter. If you do as the instructions say, and refresh the oil in the proper amount, it should not cause any problem. If it does, just remove the MAF sensor and carefully clean it with some electronic parts cleaner.

Good luck!

Don't over-oil the K&N and it will NOT foul up your MAF sensor. You should pull the sensor and clean it once a year or so anyway, with the proper electronics spray cleaner.

6 months x 2. Doesn't seem to be all that dirty either.

K&N? no. I had put in one of their "high flow" drop in filters and it clogged up my MAF sensor, cost me $$$. Their isn't any benefit with "high flow" drop in filters. Only type of gains you would really see is if you go CAI with the least amount of bends in the pipe for ultimate flow. Look into dryflow filters.

I noticed an increase in power with a drop in, but I also gutted my box, which I'm sure helped some. Then, I got a simlar performance gain over the K&N drop in when I went to the FWI, with 9" K&N cone filter.
