Autobahn option? Empty
PostSubject: Autobahn option?   Autobahn option? EmptyWed Mar 11, 2009 8:25 am

"What is the Autobahn option?"

The Autobahn option only applies to classic Auroras and it was a factory option that included Michelin tires with a V speed rating instead of a standard S rating, and a 3.71 transaxle final ratio instead of the standard 3.48. What they didn't advertise - and the reason why many people ask if they have the option - is that these two changes allowed the engineers at Oldsmobile to increase the speed limiter from 110 mph in the non-Autobahn car up to 135-140 mph in the Autobahn equipped car. In addition to a greater maximum speed the optional transaxle ratio also gives quicker acceleration and poorer fuel economy but who care about fuel economy. lol
Anyways do guy know if this would work on you cars since its from the auroras? i know the trans in the 95 rivs are pretty much junk once you get over a 100k on them so i want to upgrade to a stronger trans. with out geting it out a 97+ car.

All we need on our Rivs is appropriately rated tires and someone with a DHP or HP Tuners tool to change the speed limiter settings. Been there, done that.

There isn't anywhere around here on Idaho roads that I would feel safe going over 110mph anyway! Took my 98 Riv up to the speed limiter several times when bringing her back from Minnesota where I bought on Ebay. There are only 6 Rivs in this little town.

Its pretty scary up at those speeds, my brakes were cookin' after i brought it down from 110 no But then again it was on a narrow road so that added to it. I like to keep it pretty legal angel

I ran at 140 for a few minutes once in my '98 Riv. I just had to catch that Acura and BMW that were racing... Felt very stable, I had no complaints at all, but I do use speed rated tires.

You just need a tuner to remove the speed limiter, or buy an aftermarket PCM.

I didn't think about the speed rating when I ran that fast. Got home and when I started having slow leak problems found out my tires were weather cracked very bad on the back sides of all my tires! Bought new higher rated tires so I should be good. I usually keep it legal too.

I don't know anywhere you can get a PCM for an OBDI Riv. With OBD II you can make your own... I was looking into trying to get a custom chip burned for my '96 OBDI Van to modify the shift points (better for towing), but it was so hard to do I finally gave up. Start with TUNERCAT and look for an EEPROM burner on google and you'll see why nobody makes them... I'm sure somebody with more interest in EE can follow through on it, but it was too much of a PITA for me.

I've read that Sinister Performance will do custom PCM's for OBD I cars. [/i]
