Subject: Really worried about my car, NEED HELP!!!! Tue Jun 23, 2009 1:11 am
okay so earlier today i got on it a little bit and i noticed that my "service engine soon" light was flashing on and off, then it just stayed on. So i parked my car and let it cool down for a few hours. I started my engine and drove it around, the "service engine soon" light was still on. I got on it a few more times just to get a feel for what may be wrong. Under somewhat hard acceleration my car starts making a loud "purring" noise(dont know how to describe it). i looked under the hood to find nothing visibly wrong. I have a 4" PVC intake, i thought it may be that or hopefully my plugs arent firing of something cheap. Im really worried about my car. Its my only means of transportation, and im currently jobless so i dont have money to fix it. Please help if you have any idea what this may be. Thanks

Get the code read. Probably a misfire.

Depending on the model year of your Riv (PLEASE ADD THIS INFO TO YOUR SIGNATURE!!!), most auto parts stores will read the codes for free and give you the info. Report back when you have more details.

well...sounds like something what has happened to my car TWICE!
1st time was the fault of wires (missfire in one cylinder) 2nd time was the coil (missfire in two cylinders)
whit 1 cylinder off..it still accelarates but vibrates like this: thats what mine did.
check all the sparkplugs then check all the sparkplug wires visually for cracks/cuts burning/melting marks.
then you still dont find anything wrong... do what i did.. *take back seat out...take the fuelbump reley off(on test starting the engine will not send any fuel into cylinders...and take off the interjor fuse to save the batterys charge)
*take off all sparkplugs.
*connect one sparkplug to sparkplug wire and hold the metal part of the sparkplug somewhere against the cars ground (-) best is the engine lifting O ring what you can find on front of the engine close to header.
*let someone turn the ignision key to crank the engine.
*see if the plug makes any spark. check all plugs this way whit the same coil and wire. if the plugs all sparked they should be ok.
*check the wires. same way as before whit sparkplugs but use them in turns on one coil. so you can be sure that the coil allways gives the charge to the wire.
if all the wires made the spakrplug spark then they are ok!
next: check the coils do this as before but whit each coil.
1st connect 1 or 2 wires whit sparkplug to one coil and hold them against ground. if they spark they are ok...do the same whit coil nr 2 and 3.
if they all haed a spark then the coils are ok.
and BTW! if you do this then allways ISOLATE the OTHER COILS on that time when you test!!! but isolating tape araund the coils tips. if you dont do that then you will get one hot electric shock like i did....and it will keep your hair up for some minutes!
GOOD LUCK

By all means, test the coil packs and wires. I know I had a misfire and a SES flash once. It was directly related to the coupler on the supercharger. At 146,000, you've probably replaced it at least once already

mine had 143000miles when the factory wires went bad. just replaced them whit new ones and problem was solwd.
and yes replacing sparkplug wires was easy. changing sparkplugs is easy on front of engine but a bit dificult beheind the engine. depends what dools you use. the sparkplug is 16mm

ok i got my scan at auto zone, and they printed it off, my cylinder 4 is misfiring. this is what the print out said.
-Cylinder misfire detected-cylinder number 4 Explanation -The powertrain control module monitors the crankshaft speed and has detected a misfire condition Probable Cause -Ignition system fault-spark plug(s), ignition wires, coil -vacuum leak -injector fault -high or low fuel pressure
What do you guys suggest?

If you haven't changed plug wires before, the way to do it is to only change one at a time. That way you don't mess up the firing order.

I agree with Snowdog - it's probably ignition related: plugs (cheap) or wires (not as cheap) or coils (not as likely).
You can take the plugs out and inspect. If they all look the same, it's probably not the plugs. If they look corroded or black, or if #4 looks different, replace all the plugs. Costs about $10.
If the plugs are fine, you could have bad wires. They wires don't have to look bad to fail. Your description seems to point at the wires. When mine went at 109k miles, I thought my transmission was falling apart. $59 got me a new set of wires, problem solved.
It could be a coil pack, but this is not common. Since each coil fires 2 cylinders at a time, you would be getting multiple misfires if that were the case.
I'd check the plugs and replace the wires. What Jack the R is saying, when you replace the wire set (6 wires), swap out one new wire at a time rather than taking them all off at once. This way you won't get them mixed up - then you'll really have problems. The engine won't run very well with crossed ignition wires.
