I was wondering......I just recently found a nail pierced my back left tire. It pierced a tiny bit above the start of the tread block. I was told by a sketchy mechanic that it has pierced the sidewall and is unrepairable. I just want a second opinion.

unfortunately it is unrepairable. a patch/plug normally only works when placed on a flat surface, which is the tread area. all tire shops have a rule (probably a formal law too) prohibiting the repair or any tire hole outside and including the last block of tread.

The problem with patching a sidewall hole is probably due to the amount of flexing that the sidewalls go thru. Hard for a patch to hold there.

I successfully plugged a nailhole once in the area I think your talking about. Had to do it to get the truck home and i wouldn't recommend it for a performance vehicle, like i said this was a work truck. I always carried a plug repair kit in the glove box and can of fix a flat under the seat...this combination worked for me and when I sold the truck 3 years later it still held air pressure. Just get a good kit from NAPA and a fresh can of slime or fix-a-flat...for a rear tire...hey see if it works you'll have to replace the tire anyway.
