| Is it possible that the crankshaft sensor shares the same "E041" code as the camshaft sensor. I realize it says camshaft senor or circuit failure. But is the Crankshaft on the same circuit? Any feedback would be appreciated! thanks! | |

| Don't know for sure on the 1991, but highly doubt it for any year car with both a cam and crank sensor. They will be on different circuits and have different wiring by design and how each system communicates with the computer. They are each sending different info. | |

| I cant seem to find an error code in any of my books for the crankshaft sensor. Any thoughts? | |

| Maybe someone with your Gen car can chime in. It would be good for you if you filled out your Signature indicating what year your car is and any other info that may be helpful. Just look at the FAQ section for answers as to how to do that. Just need to click on "Board FAQ" up at the top of this page and find the question and answers as to how to do it.
And good luck Kris, I only have access to the 1998 data otherwise I might be able to help with your problem. | |

| Crank and Cam sensors will have different codes. Lately the most common cause of the crank sensor code has been in the wiring harness, near the firewall. It is a good idea to check the wire continuity from the sensor all the way back to the PCM at this point. | |

| I had just assumed you checked all the wiring with an ohmmeter. Bad assumption I guess. As Derek has said, If you have changed the sensor and continue to get the code then you need to follow the wiring diagram and check for any broken (open) or shorted wires in the harness from your cam sensor to the firewall and to the PCM. Will obviously need the wiring diagram and double check where the wire goes through any connector for corrosion or breakage. These cars are getting old enough now that wires can get brittle inside the wire insulation and break where you can't see it. So a resistance check is in order. Good Luck and post what you may find. | |

| Don't you need the 4X4 in your neck of the woods.?? If you lived closer I'd make an offer on it, but my guess is you NEED it.

| Good news....it's not the wiring. The cam interupter is missing off the cam sprocket....Now to pull the timing cover to replace it! | |

| Kris, Great, you found the problem. Not great that it is the can interrupter but, you found the problem. Please follow up with us as to how you repair this with pictures, if possible, as we have plenty of members that would be interested in seeing the fault. Thanks, Rick
p.s. Thanks for adding info to your Sig. it will be helpful in the future for troubleshooting purposes and to other members that own the same year as you do.!!!!

| Kris, I looked through my 1991 Riv/Reatta FSM and could not find any reference to a crank sensor error code either (I did find the E041 reference for the cam sensor, though). When you mention interrupter, do you mean the 18X & 3X interrupter rings on the backside of the harmonic balancer? Since I believe the rings are made of steel, did they rust out on you? Also, if most of the rings are missing I would think the crank sensor would be somewhat messed up too. If it were up to me, I'd change out both the crank and cam sensors while at it. I'm very interested in seeing any pic's you provide since I own 2 '92 rivs. The more info I can get on this generation riv, the more dangerous I can become!...thanks... | |

| I have pulled the timing cover(mine was a chore for some reason). and it was the cam sensor interupter. The harmonic balancer rings are ok,no rust, not bent etc. the sensor for the crank looks good as well. I have a new one and just might put it in while i'm this far into it. | |

| Here are some pics...please excuse the quality.I took them with my cell phone. you can see the broken interuptor on the top timing gear. https://2img.net/h/i825.photobucket.com/albums/zz174/grabber302/morecamstuff.jpg[/url] | |
