I had until very recently a '98 Riv, and we used to have an '86. The '90 is a very nice car.
Regarding your comments about modifying for performance, and wishing for a Northstar V8 - read around on this site and you will see a few things -
first, as AA mentioned, we found this site through a desire for more performance! A stock Riv is not worth very much, neither is a modified one. So it's all in what enjoyment you get out of driving one! The majority of discussions and modifications here relate to the last run of 3800 - and mostly the supercharged version. These have a lot of potential for more power, and yet can retain excellent driveability and economy. My '98 Riv runs a 13.8 in the 1/4 mile, yet still achieve 27 mpg on the highway with ease.
