Oil leak? Empty
PostSubject: Oil leak?   Oil leak? EmptyMon Jun 20, 2011 6:25 pm

When I picked up my Riviera I pulled it onto a tow dolly and have quite the puddle of oil from the car being tilted to that degree. It appears the previous owner was topping it up because I found a funnel and empty oil containers in the trunk. My guess was oil pan or valve cover. I just found it odd to be instantly dripping oil when the front of the car was put on the tow dolly (tilted) any ideas?

could have been pooling in the intake area. Intake gaskets are notorious for failing and oil coming out could be a side effect, as could poor valve cover gaskets. When you tilted it, the puddles ran down the VC. Remember oil spreads out a lot, so not much oil can look like a huge leak. Not likely to be oil pan unless it was VERY overfilled.

Yeah, probably the Intake. I've seen a butt-load of 1/2" deep pockets filled with oil on 3800's. A lil tip like a tow dolly would be enough to make it "spill over".
There's really no where else for the oil to pool up, aside from the top of the transmission....

I didn't know anything was common for leaking oil externally from the intake gaskets. Seems to drip from the transmission pan area and down from there. I will have to get a better look. There is no coolant in the oil or anything like that.

I am not positive about that, but other 3800s I've done intake gaskets on have all had oil puddles in there. I wonder if they leak through the intake bolts, I've seen that before. I usually dab RTV on the intake bolt threads when I reassemble.
