Help My car wont start after key bending Empty
PostSubject: Help My car wont start after key bending   Help My car wont start after key bending EmptyMon Jul 11, 2011 3:28 pm

I didnt know where to post this but I need help before I go to the dealership and buy the wrong thing. Let me start off by telling you what happen. I sent my nephew to my car and he bent my ignition key. The bend was kinda in the middle, I was able to bent it back almost straight by tapping it with a hammer. Well there is still a slight curve or kink in the key making it really hard to push in. But when I get it in my car turns on and everything lights up but nothing as far as cranking it, I mean nothing, No clicks no fuel pump nothing. There was no damage to the chip on the key that I see. Could my car just need to be reset somehow to see if it will crank for me trying over and over to get the key in or do I need to try a new key? The key I have is original as far as I know so it is a old key.
And if I get a new key and thats not it what else could it be? Could forcing the key a little mess up what reads the chip? I plan to get a key in the morning but I want to get my car back home I had to leave it at the local high school parking lot.

My best guess would be either the chip is damaged or the bend that's still in the key is preventing the chip from being read in the ignition. I'm pretty sure there's nothing that can be reset with the car. I've never run into this before so I'm just guessing from what I know. Hopefully someone else will have a more definate answer for you. Good luck.

Do you know if the key was in the ignition when he bent it?

I'm with Aaron. How was the key bent? There is a chance that something inside the ignition was damaged if the key was bent while it was in. frown Stinks having to get another as I think the ignition blanks are pretty pricey.

Dealer can cut you a key from the VIN. Dealer will ask for proof of ownership (owner card) and ID (drivers license). Advantage is key will be straight not a copy of the straightened key. And will have the right chip (the chip is only a resistor).

If you already have the right blank the dealer should cut you a key but will still need the IDs.
