| Quick question to sage members: Will a '95 engine drop into a '98 Riv without issues? My frame and front end are in deep corrosion trouble ('95), but all else is great. Typical northeast Riv. Have a line on a '98 that needs engine. Need some good advice. Does this make sense? | |

| Absolutely backwards, Andrew. It's a matter of using available resources to make one whole, roadworthy car. I'd like to assume the basic '95 engine package will work, and any sensors could be had from the later model. Regardless of the wisdom and logic, is the swap a natural match mechanically? Thanks in advance for your input.

| I think your biggest hurdle will be the wiring harness and PCM. Mechanically the engine will stick in ok, were you thinking of the transmission too?
BillBoost would be the one to be of most help, he's done many an engine/transmission swap, knows the quirks of the 4t60e vs 4t65e, what each PCM might be expecting, wiring harness, etc... _________________

| It can be done, but you'd need to carry over all the electronics (PCM, wiring harness) from the old car, and I don't know for certain how well it would mesh with the existing wiring in the '98.
And you'd be doing a swap that nets you less power, and the '98 added a little weight from '95, so overall I don't see the point unless you're just looking to make the car run. Maybe look around and find a used Series II SC engine? I found a low mile one in NJ a couple weeks ago for about $1000. _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^

| Thanks for the responses. This does seem a backwoods approach. I'll check the car out and see if it's worth engine repair / replace.

| You would definitely have to migrate the engine/transaxle/PCM and related wiring together. It would be much bigger pain in the butt than the ~$350 or so to just get another lowish mile 98+ engine to drop in the 98. I picked up a complete L26 with 70k mi on it for $250 for my car. Expect a supercharged engine to be a little more just because it's supercharged but you can either get a non s/c and swap that off the original 98 which means you need to buy more gaskets or you can just buy a complete L67 with a warranty and that would be the faster/easier way. | |

| Thanks, Tman. All sits on a real diagnosis. Right now I know little other than there was a failure of some kind in the new '98 Riv, and the owner drove it to his mechanic. | |

| if that 98 was not whipped or abused I'd suspect a misdiagnosis, like a bad MAF or something with an attempt at diagnosis by someone who did not have a comprehensive scan tool like the Tech II or Autotap or such. | |

| Thanks for the input. I suspect a misdiagnosis myself, as does my aficiando grass roots mechanic friend. Although I now own the car, as yet I haven't arranged to move it to where I can properly determine the real issue. Soon. I'll post the results when that happens. | |
