Sorry to be a downer, but it's simply a cover for two bolts that hold the center console to the floor lol. It's a little difficult to remove but I've never broken one removing it. Flat head screwdriver works pretty well.

...an easier compartment could be installed in the part of the center console under the dash, just above the gas pedal and to the right you can reach around and in. I had a similar space in a different car, in which I hid the transceiver for a one-hand (channel selector in mic) CB radio. Bolted it right to the floor. Was a nice, stealth installation including a combination CB AM FM antenna, which worked although actually did none of the radio frequencies that well. I ended up using a magnet-mount CB whip for highway trips.

Also if you look at it carefully there is some space under the rear seat. Watch out for heat from the exhaust and electricals. That (under rear seat) is the area where dealers would install the dealer-option Motorola cellphone transceiver.

another secret compartment in the riv is to take your rear side ashtray, grab the door, and pull it straight up. It just pops out. Under is a *giant* empty area.
