Got 7 years out of the original. 8 years out of the next one. I`m pretty sure the newest one is a GM product. Any ferrous steel sticks to this thing like glue. There are magnet(s) in this thing. JMO

OK.

Just had mine replaced at about 70k miles. I'm almost certain it was the original 19yr old part.

When I had the engine rebuilt at 246k miles, the original crank and cam position sensors went right back in. At 273k now and haven't had an issue.

We may have spoken too soon, the car acted up again today *sigh*

So it apparently isn't the crank sensor after all  confused

Question:

Every summer I seem to get CPS codes, but they always go away once the weather cools off. Today I had my first time having issues starting the car after getting the code. It was only once, and it fired up just fine before and after that. Any ideas why the codes would go away when it gets below the blazing hot summer temps?

Guys, how come the original manual doesn't even mention replacing the CPS as a possible solution for the P0336 code? There are only 3 options: fix damaged wire, replace ICM or replace ECM.

When they wrote the manual the engineers probably were not anticipating this failure. I was told that but for aging problems that are different from what can be created in simulated product aging, the CPS would not fail. I was told the problem is that the sensors have internal electronic connections that may fail after certain aging and thermal cycling. When the typical failure occurs, they make when they cool off and break when heat soaked.

I chased this problem for two years and had the same intermittent P0336 code. It turned out to be a black cam sensor wire in the main harness connector underneath the brake booster was broken underneath the plastic.
