Water Barrier

are door water barriers still available for our cars at the dealer?

I doubt it. I used this,

I cut it and pieced it together to form a shield. It sticks really well and dampens sound as well.

Not that I am aware of.  I think the yardage may be available from MRO sources such as mcmaster-carr but I have not finished figuring that out yet.  I will need some for when I tear into my passenger door panel to fix issues that a tech (now fired) at the body shop created when he was being very, very stupid about opening the panel.  He tried to remove the trim from the panel without taking it off the door and did a lot of damage. He 'repaired' it but in doing so left it such that it occasionally rattles.  I'll need to take it apart and hot melt repairs onto it.  For example, I can hot melt plastic stock onto the places where he broke off screw bosses, grind them to shape, then drill hole in the new 'boss' to reset the screws.

The fabric you're looking for is going to be fiberglass, nylon or woven kevlar impregnated with vinyl or neoprene.  

Another approach might be to spray glue a sandwich of contractor trash bags, a nylon or polyester woven sheet, and maybe a layer of thin foam. Outer layer fo the trash bag material, both sides.  A scrap piece of packing foam (the thin usually white closed cell stuff on rolls) of appropriate size.  When Boy Genious put my door panel back together he just used a sheet of the packing foam as a water barrier.  It works and it doesn't.  More noise and when it's cold out you notice.  I had  a NOS barrier for the drivers door, which I installed, and you can **really** tell the difference. So I am thinking about making up a denser flexible barrier.

YW. The contractor trash bag by itself will work but you'll get noise and no real thermal barrier. Remember to get 3M 'strip calk' to hold the barrier on the inner door frame.

Yes, just like strip caulk. Much easier to work with than a trash bag.

Yes, just like strip caulk.  Much easier to work with than a trash bag.

Had not thought of that. As long as it peels back off, you're set!

I'm looking to replace my water barrier soon due to air coming in around the door handles. Anyone got any tips or comments about this problem?

You'll have to figure out how to cut a slot for the remote rod to go through. It is tricky but do-able. I promised myself I'd figure out how to use a piece of foam to block what little air I get but have not bothered yet.

Did you need 36 sq feet, or is 18 plenty to do the doors?

I think 18 is probably fine.
