PostSubject: water loss, does anyone know   water loss, does anyone know EmptyFri Jul 27, 2007 11:28 pm

there is water loss, it is lossing a little more and more every month and could never find where it was going. know that it is loosing more it does show some signs of going into the oil at my last oil change. it also now looks like there is some signs of water coming out of the engine at where the intake touches the head. does anyone know if it is an intake or head gasket. thanks for your support. the 96 SC at 60k was loosing water but could not find where it was going even on a pressure test but now at 110k 7months later it showes signs of loosing water into the oil. is there a common problem with the intake gasket or head gasket anyone knows of

I think there is a known issue with the lower intake manifold going bad on N/A 3800s, which could cause the symptoms you're seeing. Maybe some of the N/A guys can chime in with more info.

I had the same problem on my '96 riv. Some dummy at gm decided to mount plastic parts onto metal parts.....nonetheless sounds like you have an upper intake(the black plastic piece that sits on top of the motor. you can get one for about $150 bucks, and it'll probably take about 20-30 min to replace. make sure you drain the oil when you do this, and put new spark plugs in there. hope this helps!

She says it's an SC but I agree it sounds like the common NA plastic intake manifold problem.

It might be the Lower intake manifold gaskets. Dex-cool has been known to rot these gaskets away. I changed my Lim on my car and noticed that the LIM gaskets had been replaced. Here is some Dex cool ugliness

The thread is directly about DEX.

Here's a set of L36 LIM gaskets at about 30-35k miles. Please note that the DEX was probably already acidic when these were installed:
