what is the difference in vin 1 and vin k? also my check engine light came on for about 3 hours ,the car drove fine , but the light went out, does the computer keep data even after the computer resets itself and goes out

I think K is supercharged, and 1 is naturally aspirated. Which do you have?

1 is the L67 Supercharged engine and K is the L36 NA V-6.

Yes, the computer keeps the fault codes.

thanks LARRY I have a actron cp9690 scanner  and a red devil river ALDL SET UP ( but haven't used )the actron scanner didn't read any codes, do I need a tech scanner to read past faulty codes? or do I need a better scanner?

The problem is the OBD 1 system, it's no where near as sophisticated as the 1996 and up OBD 2 system.  A better scan tool might help, but I doubt you will find one today.  Any OBD 2 tool would read pending codes on an OBD 2 system. Once the light is out, it may not be possible to read the code.
