clean it and keep it clean..

The "cable" that raises and lowers the end is not really an issue. The issue is that if you let it get dirty the dirt forms plaques, basically, inside the antenna stalk and when raising and lowering the antenna itself will be damaged.

When you wash the car, raise the antenna on purpose and wipe it off. If you want to lube it, spray a light lube (wd40 etc.) onto a rag and raise the antenna, wipe it off with the wet spot of wd40 on the rag.

in the winter watch out for grime on the antenna... if you drive during or after a snow event there may be a lot of stuff on the antenna to deal with.
