| The reason your set-up is weak is because it's cheap. You have to spend money for good, new equipment that lasts. I bought two Rockford Fosgate Puch 40 amps in 1995 for $250 each. I still have them, they still work. Rated for 20 watts x 2 each, they actually put out over 105 watts each of usable power. You might find some quality used stuff on ebay, but you have to look hard. Generally you get what you pay for.
The best subs I know of for the money were the Adire Shivas, which are now out of business, but used to go for $120 ea new. The best subs period were the Adire Brahmas. A single 10" or 12" would be louder than you need. They were about $300-350 ea. These subs were monsters. They sold online, and some may be floating around still if you look.
I've always been a JL fan. The W3v3 subs look like winners to me. A couple of 12s should really pound with some power.
Kicker Solobarics are another great sub that get very loud. Since they're square, the cones move 20% more air. I currently use a single 8" Solo. Kicker put two of these little 8" beasts into a Chevy Blazer and fed them 2400 watts to hit 155 dB!!!
Remember, if you want to get loud with cheap subs/amps, you're going to have to use a lot more of them, whereas the good brands will get loud with only a couple drivers and a maybe a single amp. You get what you pay for! _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^

| like Aaron said, you really do get what you pay for. well, most of the time. a friend of mine just sold me his setup. 2 kicker 10's and a memphis amp for $100. carpeted box included. that amp alone sells for almost $200. anyways it hits very hard for just 2 10's. i have boost off and gain 1/2 way down b/c any higher and my license plate rattles too much. i always buy new when i can, but if money is tight you can check craigslist.com or a local city forum that has a sales section. in orlando we have a "orlando forums" board that has all kinds of local info on parties and it even has a separate section for "car audio FS". thats where alot of good deals can be found, plus there will be no shipping since it's local. good luck, oh and the memphis amp i have is only rated at like 300RMS at 4ohms but it powers better than some 900rms amps for some reason. i've heard all memphis audio performs better than how it looks on paper. _________________ 1996 with 254k miles, L32 4" FWI -> ported N* -> Ported Gen V w/3.0" Pulley, Stage 3 Phenolic I/C, ZZP FMHE, 1.84 RR, Headers and 3" pipe to mufflers, F-body brakes, and lowered on Eibachs. -RIP AMG C400 White on black. | Most of the more expensive amp brands are conservatively rated, especially if designated as "high-current" operation. This is so they do well in competition. You tap into the extra power by wiring subs in low impedance loads (running into 2, 1, 1/3 even 1/4 ohm). Try this on a cheaper amp and it will shut down or catch on fire.
Orion used to make a 50w amp called the HCCA 225. It was tiny in size, and rated 25 watts x 2 channels into 4 ohms, but it was stable into 1/2 ohm. It would drive 2 subs with 25 watts each, but you could use DVC subs, wire the coils in parallel for 2 ohms, and now you had 2 subs with 50 watts each. And it didn't stop there. You could then wire 2 more subs for a total of 4 subs, and this amp would supply each one with 50 watts. Want more? If you had 4 more subs, you could wire them in, so now you had 8 subs, each one getting 50 watts, and it was clean power. With cooling fans and stiffening caps, some ran the amp into 1/4 ohm; it would power 16 subs with 50 watts each, a total of 800 watts!
That's a great example of how underrated some of the better amps are. The Orion HCCA was called a "cheater amp" because someone could enter the 0-50 watt class and their HCCA 225 and make 400 watts or more, destroying everyone in the SPL contest. If you had the money, Orion also made the HCCA 625, an amp 3 times the size of the 225, rated 25 watts into 6 channels, but it would drive 24 subs with 1200 watts! _________________ '05 GTO 6.0L • 6-spd • 95k miles • 0-60: 4.8s • 16.9 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:26'95 Celica GT 2.2L • 5-spd • 165k miles • 0-60: yes'98 SC Riviera • 281k miles • 298 HP/370 TQ • 0-60: 5.79s • ET: 13.97 @ 99.28 • 4087 lb • 20.1 avg MPG • Nelson Ledges Lap: 1:30 3.4" pulley • AL104 plugs • 180º t-stat • FWI w/K&N • 1.9:1 rockers • OR pushrods • LS6 valve springs • SLP headers • ZZP fuel rails KYB GR2 struts • MaxAir shocks • Addco sway bars • UMI bushings • GM STB • Enkei 18" EV5s w/ Dunlop DZ101s • F-body calipers EBC bluestuff/Hawk HP plus • SS lines • Brembo slotted discs • DHP tuned • Aeroforce • Hidden Hitch^^^ SOLD ^^^ '70 Ninety-Eight Holiday Coupe 455cid • 116k miles^^^ SOLD ^^^ | |
