PostSubject: Found a cheap Riviera. Should I run or buy?   Found a cheap Riviera. Should I run or buy? EmptyTue Feb 26, 2008 8:40 pm

Hi my name is Jason. I always loved these cars since they irst came out. I thouht they had a beautiful design.
I wa the owner of a 84 Cutlass that cloned into a 442 and put a Grand National engine in until it was recently stolen.

I absolutely love the Turbo Buick's and Olds 442's so I guess the natural rogression would be the SC Buicks.
Looking forward to learning more.

Found a Riviera for sale and have questions?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I came across a 95 Riviera for sale at one of those Donate-your-car places.
It has 153k miles. The mechanic said it had a bad oil leak when it came in and he replaced the front seal. It seemes to run quiet and smooth but when he first started it it sounded like a bearing noise coming from the motor for about a second, SC maybe? It was only a split second and went away.He said the oil light comes on after about 10-15 minutes. He think maybe an oil line my be clogged butisn't sure.

The paint was ok, faded to primer in a few spots and the interior was excellent. It had one ding in the quarter.
I asked if he had driven it and he said yes, and it drives and shifts fine.
Price is only $1500. I am thinking of it as a drive to work car.
What are the trouble areas to look out for? What issues / noises to look out for when the Supercharger goes out?
Any thoughts?

it might be the SC couple then tend to go after 100K i would replace the oil line , clean out the oil pan, replace all the fluids, and the coupler, and say it would be good. but i haven't seen or drove it so i don't know. i would try to talk them down also. or try to get some kind of warranty

Welcome to the forum! I noticed you had posted the same question in two different sections and thought it would be better to keep this all together. I merged the threads together, so the posts may look a little different. Check the website in my sig for some information about Riviera's. There should be a link on things to look for before you buy. I would probably pass on that Riviera unless you like to work on cars. The 1995 Riviera has the series 1 engine in it. It isn't a bad engine, but there are more mods for the series 2 engine.

Thanks for merging the posts. I haven't driven it yet either. I just happened to drive by the plae and seen the Rivi there, did a U-Turn and checked it out. I didn't have time for a test drive.
He wasn't realfirm on the price and noted the flaws as a reson for the prie he suggested. The car was donated so pretty much anything is money to feed those in need. What I was mainly wondering was if it was going to be a big headache or possibly something small.
I know no one would know without actualy seeing it but thought I would post and see if there were known things like mentioned above.
I will do some more research on here tonight.

I'd be wary of this car at that price. Oil light on after warm up... Offer 500 but not unless you're prepared for the possibility of putting a lot of money into it.

The rattle at idle may be the supercharger coupler. It is a relatively cheap, if time consuming fix. Go to ZZPerformance and look up the coupler. There is also a link on how to fix. Hint. DO NOT spill the old or new oil anywhere. It is incredibly smelley.

The 'RUN' part is that the oil light comes on after 15 minutes of run time. That means after the oil is hot and thin, it's not able to maintain pressure. Usually indicates worn bearings, so think it would be in for a rebuild soon. As long as you are ready for that eventuality, you'll be okay with it.

Otherwise look for a '97-'99 for a little more if you want an engine easier to mod...
