How loud would the Riv be with straight pipes but leaving the resonator and cat? My dad decided to be a jerk and said that the mufflers he was gonna give me are his and he doesn't want me modding my car. I told him it was my money I was going to pay to get it mounted but he's saying he'll take them away. In that case, I'm thinking about going up there and just having them put straight pipes in (To show him he should've just let me have the mufflers). I had planned on putting the mufflers on tomorrow but I guess not now...
So, anyone have straight pipes to share how loud it is? How much quieter would glasspacks make it?
EDIT: Would it roughly sound like this?

Nice Corey, that would definitely be too loud though! I do have to drive past a police station almost every time I leave the neighborhood so I can't be too ridiculously loud (Unless of course it was controlled like my cutout would've been but that's way too expensive).

Keep in mind, the non-muffled sound of a 90º V-6 sounds good with a lopey cam, but sorta noisy with a stock engine. I think you'd be pulled over rather quickly. I've been ticketed twice for V-6s with worn-out mufflers.

Now he's trying to tell me if I put mufflers on it, they will start to rust and I don't have to deal with it now and I will then. See, this - this is why I don't like having my car. I can't do what I want to it. Because it was his car first he feels like he can tell me everything to do to it. I don't even feel like I'm driving my car, more or less I'm driving my parents car and pretending it's mine. If we got something different and it was my car from the start, it'd be different. Further amplified in irritation by all the mods it's okay for him to do but how bad and awful they are when I want to do them.
God forbid I do anything to my car, I'm not satisfied with it stock the way it is. I can't even get him to replace the S/C coupling which I'm almost positive needs to be replaced. He thinks the whole S/C is probably bad. Just like everything else we have, it'll only get fixed until something blows up (In other words, the entire S/C).

Life can suck until you can get out from under the parents, no doubt about it. But that also brings its own problems to deal with on your own.

Agree with Dave. Imagine what it would be like if you had to buy your own gas, make car payments, rent - oh, and then your company lays you off.
Shintsu- Chances are even if you had your own car your parents wouldn't want you modding it.
Everytime something breaks on my car i hear " you should stop messing with it" , even if something breaks that isn't my fault , but i continue anyway because i want my car to be completely satifying to drive. Now i'm getting fairly close to that point , I'm just about 20hp , some wheels and a wood dash kit from my car being near perfect ( for what i want it to be anyway).
AA- I'm guessing that comes from experience?

Yes, I've been laid off. Peanut butter, jelly, spaghetti, no driving until I found a new job 8 months later. It sucked, but it was the best thing for my career. Ended up with a better job paying a lot more.
they are right about that..stay at home long as you can! when i moved out i had it made and all but bills and the like are a real beotch. i have to hear my stepdads mouth when im doing something to the riviera..like the other day i put my chrome grill on and he of course came in, what are you doing? why would you want to do that? you need to leave that car alone..and so on. but like i was told, theres nothing like having your own shit! i was making around 3500 a month after tax on a deployment and had no bills whatsoever but i had no car or license so i blew the money. my boy told me to buy a car because its a whole new concept of freedom when you can just get up and leave whenever you like..similar to living with the parents. i cant walk around naked, have sex all over the house, etc..but i have no bills so you gotta take the good with the bad lol

hey i got no mufflers with only res and cat and its not too loud. loud enough to sound bad ass but if i am drivin by a cop there is no way he will pull me over. take out the mufflers and put in a y pipe. thats what i did and couldn't be happier. o and by the way i was wondering does that open up your exhaust to be able to run a 3.4? just wonderin cuz i have the y pipe, al104s, and CAI

hard to say without scanning, but i'd bet money you would have too much pressure at the heads. you need to open up the exhaust with headers or plog+DP to be able to run a 3.4.
did you see any gains with your y-pipe mod? can you get a video of how it sounds.

I don't know if there were any gains with the y-pipe. I have to edit the last post a bit. I actually bought the car with the y-pipe the way it is. so i would think since removing the mufflers would let the exhaust flow a little bit freer at least. probably not enough for that big of a change but it sounds awesome. I'll get a video up. im on a budget right now otherwise i would already have headers, cat-back, scanner, and 3.4. but obviously 3.4 comes after scanner

i got rid of the cat, and i notice the exhaust sounds a little louder, not by much, but mostly when i step on it, it gives a better growl to it, so when you get rid of the mufflers, would that make it louder like a muscle car or an old school monte, or just like deleting the converter? i dont want to get rid of them if itll sound like an old ass chevy with a 350 in it. i want that Marauder sound when i take off

It's a 3800, it's going to sound like shite if you make it loud. From my experience there is no good setup other than maybe swapping stock mufflers for turbo mufflers or miniturbos. I hate to admit it but our motors sound like shit! You'll mostly get a chainsaw effect. Expect something like this:
Nothing close to this
or this
For either sounds, you need two more cylinders - I don't think you're going to even get close with a six (Did hear a six cylinder junkstang that sounded like an eight though but that was only one).
I wish our sixes could sound more like this

i think ill pass on that one then. i thought it might make it sound better and move faster. but ill deal with the speed rather than have to hear it sounding like a hoopty

Generally true, except for VW's VR6. That's one great sounding engine.

my roommate would be ecstatic to hear that from a riv owner he has a project Mark 2 jetta with the VR6 and he is putting a large snail in it. i give him shit all the time b/c that's all he talks about is how bad ass it will sound...when it's running. i dont doubt it, but i'll continue to until it IS running.

There's no comparison between the exhaust sound on my 68 with headers, true dual exhaust, and Magnaflows out back, vs the Riv's exhaust sound. LOVE my old 350 V8 Buick...

That monte carlo in the video sound kinda like my 86 I love the sound of my 350 also. I also have a 87 monte carlo that I'm getting ready to swap a 600hp bbc454 in to that's gona be a beast I would be running low 11s in the 1/4 all motor with that set up! My 86 runs mid to high 12s in the 1/4 all motor. I still haven't got the riv out there yet are local track is being remodeld should be open next month!

On my brothers stock 95 riv, we cut out the stock mufflers and put some turbo packs (metal glass packs) in place. Has a nice quiet tone to it. Barely noticeable in the car. But we left the stock res in place.

I found this GP exhaust setup and although he doesn't rev it up too high, it seems to sound pretty good

I suppose to sum up a 3800 sound, you could use the term 'evil.' It drones, it's raspy, it's low-revving compared to a lot of other 6's, but it can also spool, whine/scream, and any way you slice it they're fast. The slow, lower revs of the engine combined with the high pitched scream from the s/c is an almost perfect balance. Heaven and hell. 3800's don't roar like an eight or buzz like a four, they bark like a big six.
They sound slow and loud, but they're fast.
I'll use Eric's Riv as an example. When the revs are dropping and they're almost back to idle, that raspy sound from the exhaust is just perfectly evil. Makes me think of Cruella DeVille for some reason, not sure.
